We have seen a heap of information about the kids in next years draft (thanks to Mojo) but I would like some information on the players in the AFL that are out of contract at the end of 06.

Carlton will be in a position to recruit a big name at the end of the year so lets see who will be available and what our preference (for player type) would be...

Mojo perhaps you have some info on uncontracted players?

Luke Ball.

Fabian Deluca (brother of Adrian). Huge ruckman who will come out of contract at the end of this year. Is at Port and would make a strong enquiry about whether he is homesick and would like to join his brother. 203cms and 19 years old (turned 19 last week only). Not skinny either and close to 100kgs.
Pretty mobile and has talent.

Ivan Maric. Ruck at Adelaide who will be out of contact at the end of the year. Mobile and good leap and athletic. Not overly tall. Vic boy.

John Meesen. Draft pick 8 to Adelaide in 2004 draft. Vic boy also. Superbly fit and is 199cms when drafted and has genuine size.

So apart from Luke Ball who I think of the top of my head is uncontracted at years end the theme is locals boys who were drafted to interstate teams. Done there 2 years mandatory deals and maybe be homesick and not settled.
Think Fergus Watts/Daniel McConnell. The fact they are all ruckmen is also a big help.

Pretty hard to shift an established star these days but a homesick young player is a different story. Would also make an enquiry about Brent Reilly from Adelaide. I know he re-signed last year but he is going backwards at the Crows. Has talent and skills and pace and might need just more gametime rather than playing behind Ricciutto.

All rookies get a 1 year deal. Bentick is 2007. Houlihan is 2006. Wiggins/Bannister is 2006. McGrath is 2006 (not 100% on him).
Teague/French signed 2 year deals at the end of last year so they are 2007. Simpson is 2006 (not 100% on him).
I dont know about McLaren.

Thanks Mojo, I think your strategy regarding targeting homesick young potential is the right way to go.

I was also under the impression that Delidio and Goddard were both out of contract at the end of 06? Would be nice to pick one of them up but unlikely.

we'd never be able to land Deledio ... but Goddard however ... he is(was) a Carlton fanatic growing up. I dont think he really fits St Kilda's plans anyway, as he's contantly played out of position.

He's definatley a chance :thumbsu: anyother interstaters or disgruntle'd players we could target ?

IMO we should be looking at uncontracted key position defenders, thats where we have all our problems at the moment.

Yep thats a good point but Delidio was also a Carlton supporter growing up, his father played 1 game for the Blues! I think it is highly unlikely but if we did get one of these guys or a similar talent then our midfield stocks would be looking very good from 2007 onwards!

I think Cooney aswell was a Carlton supporter groing up in SA :D

speaking of key position defenders, who did you have in mind ?

You would think that with Kouta being out of contract at the end of the year and Lappin moving onto the Veterans list that we will be in a great position to pick up the best uncontracted player, regardless of who it is. In my opinion we should be focusing on trying to get a pacy, skillfull midfielder...

No one else can go on vets list for another few years.

Thats a good sign that our list comprises of young players rather than the majority being in the older bracket as in the past.

i;m sure they will extend their contract :) fevolas ok for this and next year
at least and maby some of 2008 hope he gets his contract extened
i'm sure he'll stay put they should take less to stay at the club :)
lappin might as well extened for another 2 or 3 to make sure he finishes at carlton. cheers

So in your opinion we're a good chance to finish last this season?

Yeah I'm almost certain Chance will stay at Hawthorn.

in simple terms: Yes

after all, we are odds-on favourite for the spoon ... I would assume that makes us a chance.

Andrew Embley
Michael Braun
Chad Fletcher
Ashley Hansen
Adam Selwood

all West Coast (plus Kerr and Cousins who wont be shifted but will require significant salary increases that might mean one of those 5 might be squeezed out)

Embley is the one who would fit our need for pace and ball carrying ability and age at 24. Braun and Fletcher are older and not so quick.
Hansen is a Vic boy but a leading forward we are just about stocked with now. Selwood has shown he is a good tagger and improved last year and would help our midfield out quite a bit. 21 and still improving.

Adelaide also have a few

Graeme Johncock
Nathan Van Berlo (small midfielder with exceptional running ability)
Chris Knights (another young mid)

I read with interest this morning that Richmond have initiated contract discussions with Delidio - Would be great if he held out until the end of the year and ended up a Blue...... We should be in his managers ear now and throwing the $$$ at him.

I'm trying not to think about this scenario. It's not good for one's health.

Would love to see Deledio in a Blues Jumper, but it would be very hard to get him here although he was a blues supporter growing up. Ashley hansen i rate pretty highly but now with Josh Kennedy not shure if we would go for him plus i hear that Hansen has a Perth girlfriend and is popular at the club and very settled...
