I was looking through draftguru.com.au to revisit our personnel moves between the finals appearance in 95 and the next one in 01. I noticed that in 95, three players are listed as "Uncontracted signings" including Stewart Maxfield. The others are a West Coast scrub and a Melbourne scrub. The Melbourne scrub went to Sydney with Maxfield and the Eagle scrub went to Freo.
Under that section is "Uncontracted Signing Compensation Underage Picks". The Eagles got Wirripunda and the Dees and Tiges got nothing.
I checked other years and in 94 there were 7 uncontracted signings to Freo and the clubs they came from all got the compensation picks (including Mathew Lloyd, Steven King and Chad Morrison). In 93, Peter Caven was the only uncontracted signing from Fitzroy to Sydney with no compensation. In 96, four players went as uncontracted signings to Port but there was no compensation for any of their teams.
Does anyone remember the system in place over those few years? I was young and drunk at the time and don't remember how it worked. Why in 93 and 96 was there no compensation, in 94 everyone got compensated and in 95 only the Eagles did? How did a player become an uncontracted signing rather than go into the pre-season draft?
