Emma Quayle's initial thoughts on next year's crop of draftees...

Talent pool a tad thin

Some recruiters are struggling to find more than 30 players in this year's junior pool that they would have complete confidence in selecting.
The bonus for the Giants is that while this draft will kick them off nicely, it will keep most of their opponents where they are. If any make serious improvement out of this draft, given the lack of depth they will have done very well.

It means established clubs will have to look hard. Clubs have always drafted from state leagues, but in the past they have been able to focus on the very best. This year they'll have to do more than that, given the shallow junior pool and the fact that, like Gold Coast last year, GWS can keep or trade players bypassed in previous drafts.
Clubs looking for key-position players might wish they already had them. Some of the better ''talls'' on offer don't seem big enough to play in key positions

And an early top 10. Patton, Coniglio, Wingard, Kavanagh, Tyson, Longer, Hoskin-Elliott, Sumner, D Smith, Crozier.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned but should be is looking at 16 year olds now.

It could very much be Tigers trading whatever to GWS for 17 year olds in 2012 on top of the draft 2012 super draft .

This suits our window unlike most so this is very possible!!

Just heard in the WA v SA U18 game special talent predicted by some in the u16 champs in Sydney!!!

This is good for Richmond and something we need to keep abreast of in line with GC and GWS!!

That will be Jack Martin, indigenous kid from Geraldton. Dominated the State schoolboy championships last year, convincingly winning the player of the carnival award playing at centre half-forward.

Saw Conca there too, assume knew some blokes from WA

They interviewed him on the FoxFooty coverage.

Said he is still mates with a few of them, and was keen to watch their progress. He was invited to come and speak in front of them at a dinner, at some point during the tournament I think it was.

Hey Toady, you got much to add about what you saw at the two games last night? Did you see any of the Div 2 games? For RFC sakes, any ideas who might fall into the category of 12-20 picks?

It's fair to say this years crop looks very underwhelming at this stage DD.

I saw Vic C take on NT and Metro take QLD down at VISY a few weeks ago and felt much of the same.

There were some good players in the Div.2 sides but the thing to remember is the Suns still have Zone access to QLD and GWS has the same access to NT for the next few years.

So it has to be assumed that they'll get the best of the lot over the next few drafts.

Players that stood out were Louis Egger, Tipungwuti and Jed Anderson who is underage.

Egger is good with his grunt work as a inside mid and might be worth looking at late. Tipungwuti is capable of the impossible and plays with real flair where ever he is on the ground. He can create off of the half back line, lead up or crumb in the forward line and do some rioli-esque shit around the clearances extracting the ball or reading the tap. Trouble is we just don't see enough of it as he is VERY unfit and will vanish after one good quarter.

Jed is very well rounded and will be a definate first round prospect next year if he is not picked up by GWS which most of these boys will IMO.

As for who I think could be available at our first pick best case scenario someone like Sumner, Hoskin-Elliot, Kavanagh or a Buntine. They are the players who seem to float around the edge of the top 10. All would be quality picks IMO. Kavanagh would be the most ideal for us I think in that he is a ball magnet inside and out and averages around 6 tackles a game. He missed the champs with a hamstring but will probably push up out of reach by seasons end. The others I mentioned are very outside players and Buntine is more a HBF/Mid, not a pure mid which I think would be ideal as we lack pure midfielders depth wise.

Realistically probably someone like Brad McKenzie , Devon Smith or Bolger will be available. Or the bolters in Tyson and Greene.

Here's an article on Kav:

Thanks Toady. Kavanagh does sound like a good fit.

Did anyone from Tassy stand out in the carnival?

Also, what are your thoughts on the indigenous forwards from WA? Yarran and Gartlett. Any idea how they compare to their namesakes (cousins?) at the same age?

Metro dominate AA selections

2011 NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team:

Defenders: Jed Anderson (NT), Michael Talia (Vic Metro), Brandon Ellis (Vic Metro), Brad Crouch (Vic Country), Brody Mihocek (Tas), Alex Forster (SA)

Midfield: Billy Longer (Vic Metro), Dom Tyson (Vic Metro), Stephen Coniglio (WA), Jaeger O’Meara (WA), Toby Greene (Vic Metro), Will Hoskin-Elliott (Vic Metro)

Forwards: Chad Wingard (SA), Sam Mayes (SA), Lachie Whitfield (Vic Country), Ben Kennedy (SA), Jonathon Patton (Vic Metro), John McKenzie (Tas)

Interchange: Mitchell Grigg (SA), Brodie Grundy (SA), Taylor Adams (Vic Country), Clay Smith (Vic Country)

Top prospects

Only one ruckman listed amongst that 25 or so (Billy Longer). I think there's a fair chance he'll be off to GWS :(

Will Whitfield be one of the 17 yearolds GWS can pickup? and can we trade for him, we should be going hard for him. Tuck, Nahas and a second rounder for him?

I think the AFL have shot themselves in the foot regarding the rules of the 17 year olds.

According to AFL website, clubs negotiate consideration for first pick, then second pick and so on.

So a club like Richmond or whoever cannot negotiate for the first two picks. The problem with this is certainty and the second pick value is diminished because you do not know what player the club could get.

For example a club could put more up for the first two because they knew they would get omeara then whoever they wanted. But now after the first pick, which is restrictive as well because it makes it harder for a club to give the true value of the pick presumably omeara if only has players and picks to use as opposed to players and picks for the first 2 players, which club is going to chase the second pick when you do not know what you are going to get as available???
