The team we barrack for is synonomous with the colours of the club. In actually watching our boys play, it is also vital to which team is which, and how easy it is to follow the play. It also has a strong emotional collection, we live and die for our team colours and uniform.
Recently, in the last few games, I found myself quite irritated at the club colours. A few weeks ago we had purple socks. I thought I was watching Fremantle. Last week we had the stickman Guernsey, which from the back displayed red and white (with a tiny bit of black in the sponsor logo, I thought I was watching the Swans.
This is literally diminishing my love of watching our boys play through confusion and frustration.
We are St Kilda, the red, black and white. Stripes are preferred, as we have had for 'quite a while now'. It is easier to see, and associated with the passion of our club. It's great (or not so much) to continually make alterations to the uniform of our club but it needs to still be legible, to clearly identify our team on the ground, and to associate in a passionate way with the history of our club. When markleting or other causes deviate from this, we the fans lose out. I wish we could just keep it simple (and traditional) for a while.
Or maybe I'm just getting old!
