SANFL 1978 grand final . Norwood 16.15 111 defeated Sturt 14.26 110. That's a massive 71 scoring shots in the game with Sturt having 40 and still loosing.

That's a scoreworm I'd like to see.

Heard today actually the Blues beat the Tigers in a grand final despite Richmond having 40 shots on goal and scoring 150 odd. Can you imagine that these days lol

One of only two teams to kick 5 goals in every quarter of the grannie. And still they lost!

2 goals 12 behinds
3 goals 9 behinds
4 goals 8 behinds

There is only one other member in this unusual set. Kudos to anyone who gets it.

Swans in the semi vs cats and gf vs wce kicked only 8 goals in each game and won.

Kinda unusual to score so low in two finals and win.

8.10 wins you a flag boy oh boy.

Sumich kicked 7.9 and 7.8, 11.8 etc by himself etc. Allen Jackovich 4.10 vs cats in 1993.

Allen Jackovich now that was one crazy talented mofo.

1989 Grand Final. 21.18 vs 21.12.

Earlier that year Hawks played Cats and it was 26.15 vs 25.13.

That year Hawks and Cats kicked over 20 goals about 12 or 13 times.

No surprise that a lot of people miss the old game.

Here's a few good ones that haven't been mentioned and are reasonably obscure

R21 1986
Hawthorn 6.6 10.8 22.11 35.15
Geelong 6.1 10.5 11.9 13.12
Only 3 points in it at half time, then the Hawks came out and kicked 25 goals to 3 to win by 135.

R7 1940
North Melbourne 2.0 6.1 8.1 8.1
Melbourne 3.6 5.15 10.23 12.34
37 more scoring shots but could only manage 4.33 from them.

R7 1980
Carlton 1.5 5.10 13.13 14.27
Hawthorn 5.5 11.10 13.15 16.17
Carlton kick a goal early in the last quarter to get to 14.13, then kick 14 straight behinds and lose by 2. With about a minute left and Carlton trailing by three points, Warren Jones marked about 5m out from goal...and smacked it into the post.

R14 1956
Carlton 4.3 6.8 7.15 8.18
St Kilda 4.3 7.8 8.9 9.12
The scores were level at quarter, three quarter, and full time - surely the only time?

R17 2000
North Melbourne 0.5 11.12 13.15 14.19
Melbourne 3.5 5.8 10.12 14.18
The Roos kicked 11 goals in the second quarter but only three for the rest of the match and scrape home by a point. The scorelines for each quarter - Melbourne 23-5, Roos 73-15, Melbourne 34-15, Melbourne 30-10.

1976: Geelong 15.9.99 defeated Collingwood 11.27.93
1977: Geelong 16.6.102 defeated Collingwood 12.25.97
The Pies had 75 scoring shots to 46 across the two games, yet lost twice.

And just about my favourite,
R20 1990
St Kilda Reserves 18.8.116
Fitzroy Reserves 18.8.116

St Kilda 17.15.117
Fitzroy 18.8.116

The date? August 18th 1990 (18/8/1990)

5.7 (37) 11.13 (79) 18.17 (125) 24.19 (163)
2.2 (14) 4.3 (27) 5.5 (35) 6.8 (44)

Geelong last won (1 :p) a Grand Final in 63, which was 44 years ago at the time.

Mark Blake (#24) and Matthew Egan (#19) both missed the Grand Final. Blake being dropped after the Prelim and replaced by Steven King, and Matthew Egan with the foot injury (in the final round) which would end his career, after trying to make it back for the GF.

That horrible feeling you get when your team has more scoring shots than the opposition - and still lose.
The VFL/AFL record is 15 - imagine having that many more shots and seeing your team go down.

Essendon nearly equalled that in 1948. They kicked 7.27 to Melbourne's 10.9 (15 more scoring shots) - draw. But it was the GF!!

So onto the replay - and guess what happened there, Dons fans? Got thumped (and Essendon had beaten Melbourne twice in H&A and once in Finals up to then that season). That one must have really, really hurt at the time.

Essendon should have won 5 in a row and maybe 6 - They won in 1946, lost by a point in 1947 (with 9 more scoring shots - at half time it was 8.11-8.0), in 1948 they drew (7.27!!) and lost the replay, won in 1949, won in 1950, and lost by just 11 points in 1951.

I posted this on the Crows forums after last weeks game. Noticed Adelaide had 10 scoring shots in every quarter... 1-9, 4-6, 7-3, 6-4. Wouldn't be too many games where that would have occurred. Are there any other unusual occurrences. Another was Sydney vs Geelong - scoreline exactly the same as the 2015 GF score.

Hawthorn in R6 1982 is the only other side to record exactly 10 scoring shots in each quarter.

9 has occurred twice
8 - 4 times
7 - 8 times
6 - 17 times
5 - 15 times
4 - 9 times
3 - 8 times
2 - twice
1 - once
