Considering buying a used BMW (1999 3 series coupe) and was just wondering what people's thought's were on a car this age. Obviously BMW are a quality car manufacturer but I was just wondering do you think it will be a solid car for a decent amount of time compared to the price I would have to pay (just under 20k)

I don't know much about cars so am basing my answer on logic.

I would not buy such an old car because the fact that it's old and probably done alot of kms means the chance of it needing lots of attention is high. Not only that BMW parts are exy (are they not).

If you can afford a bmw then you wouldn't buy such an old one.

The servicing and BMW requires, the parts it needs are ****ing $, and if it's old I'm thinking it's going to need repairs?

Dad has to get his serviced every year (which is normal) but while a toyota or holden might cost, I don't know... few hundred? BMW's cost a few thousand.
I'm not to sure if that's cause our car isn't to old or if they're all like that but.

Just a heads up.

Don't buy an old BMW just because it's a BMW and you're going to be driving around thinking you're hot shit cos you've got a Beamer (if that's what you've got in mind).

Expensive to repair and service ALTHOUGH they are made to last more than most so 200,000km on a BMW might only be comparable to 100,000 on a shitty brand.

For $20K you could get a far more recent, decent Commodore or Falcon in much better condition.

It's a bit like beer brands (hear me out!), the foreign ones are always 'better'. In Germany a 318 is a fairly cheap automobile and yet people still buy foreign Japanese models. Why don't they all buy 318's (and volks)? Because they aren't really better by any long stretch. Buy Heineken in Europe and you won't pay the premium you pay here, but you will for that foreign Australian beer Victoria Bitter.

Aftyer much research and consideration I've decided to go against buying a BMW. I'm not the highest income earner in the world, far from it in fact, and the maintenance costs I think would be just too large. Especially if something was to go wrong, which is a high possibility for a car that age.
Besides the one I had my sights set firmly on was sold yesterday. If it had not been bought I probabvly would have committed to it due to it being my dream car and all.
Thanks for the info though guys. I will continue my search. I've found a nice Commodore in my price range that I'm going to look at today.

A lady I work with drove a BMW 318, it shat itself, she took it to the mechanics and he told her it was ****ed and nothing could be done - sell it for scrap metal.

Apparently because they are German they are made for the cold and can't handle the dry heat of WA summers.

She got rid of it and bought a lancer, but IIRC it was about a 99 model. So IMO steer clear and just buy a newer car which isn't an overpriced piece of shit :)

Pretty sure no-one in the world likes VB.

Just so happens I have a 1999 3 series, from my experience it has been a pleasure in the years I've had it.

It's a damn sexy car much better then the older box shaped 3 series bmw's. it looks real good on the road particulary if you get the right colour, which would be most colours.

It is not bad but not great with fuel economy. About 500-550k per tank but I do a lot of city driving.

It is quick as **** as long as you get a 2.3 litre and I've only ever had one drama in several years with mine. Fuel pump went but was only $150 for reconditioned one, I wouldn't really call that the ass ****ing as people seem to make out BMW parts to be?
I get it serviced for under $150 aswell which is actually cheaper then some people with inferior cars that I know.

The door trimmings will fall off if they haven't already on any given older bmw, you can just glue then back on if you find strong enough adhesive which can be found at any supa cheap or one of those type of shop thingy's.

The car is so well made and is reliable as all ****. Its just a great driving experience every time you get behind the wheel.

Feel free to ask me any questions seeming as I have relevant experience, ie owning one

My mate just totaled his by running it into a tree the knob :D

to the op. dont get a beamer, stick to the old commodores, cheap to repair and always reliable.

Its pretty obvious half the people in this thread haven't experienced driving something that isn't a piece of rubbish ford or holden.
