Great man Leo, no longer suffering. His story of the unfortunate incident with Thorold Merrett at Victoria Park, is one thread of the rivalry between us and the Pies. RiP Leo.

What was the incident with Thorold Merrett?
Merrett was one of my few opposition favourite players.

From my understanding Thorold went to go past Leo, and Leo moved his leg out to impede him, the unfortunate thing for Thorold was that his leg was broken, effectively ending his career. Leo did say the sound was like a shot going off....suffice to say that the Pie faithful saw it as a kick and he was lucky to leave the ground in tact...smuggled out in a police car. The Pies never forgot and Leo was banned for life from the Collingwood Social Club, years later he was kicked out of there once they knew who he was. He had many anecdotes of Pie supporters having a crack at him about the incident.

Thanks, I did not know that. I thought Thorold had retired, many players did at an young age and went bush to coach.
I probably saw Leo play., certainly remember him called on radio broadcasts
I went to the 1962 Prelim Replay, the previous week was his last game.
