I've just been thinking- this time last year one of the most exciting and pivotal players we had was Varcoe- kept the ball in the forward line with his vigourous defensive skills and tackling.

I'm actually missing his game. I hope he comes back to the seniors.

Just a passing thought.

I agree - he adds something

Definitely. In the past month I've thought we've seen the ball run out of our forward line all too easily.
Varcoe is itching closer to a recall...some improving performances in the two's are doing good things for his chances. Still needs to improve his attack on the ball and grab a few more possies per game. Running in the midfield in the VFL will improve his game

Would be great to see him have a run for stokes against the tigers...which would make sense considering he is a like for like, however Prismall's case is building again...i think the next game against Box Hill is very important for both lads.

Does anyone know how long Varcoe has signed up for...

I did ask him this at the Season Launch but it has slipped my mind. Anyone?

I'm a big fan of his. He's facing that problem of getting a run in the seniors and then making permanent. I hope he'll make it, but it isn't going to be easy. I admired his hardness.

Missing a large slice of the preseason through appendicitis is a big set back when trying to get into this team. Hopefully gets a through run inthe twos to get match fitness, regains his spot in the ones and then keeps it.

I have heard he has bulked up more this year (ie muscle) compared to last year. I thought he became a little too one dimensional last year and opposition players began to easily negate his effect. He not only needs to show good forward defensive pressure but he just needs to win the ball a bit more as well. I think Stokes is about the best we have in this role. Hard, tough and can mark and win the ball when he needs to. The only thing in Varcoes favour was his pace.

Watching the second half in the VFL last week he looks to have put on a couple of kgs. He was definitely harder at the footy than last year - actually winning contested ball on more than one occasion then speeding off from the contest. His disposal was still a little erratic but not too bad.

May come in for the suspended Stokes?

With Stokes being a permanent selection, and Gamble becoming a bit of a regular, Varcoe would struggle to get a game at this point in time. However, I don't think he is a bad person to have waiting on the wings in case one of them go down :P

As for Stokes suspension, I wouldn't be surprised if all that happens is Ablett and Ottens comes in.
