My partner and I have decided that we don't won't anymore children (have 2 young daughters under 2), so I have decided to bite the bullet and get the snip. Has anyone else been through the procedure and can give me some advise on the procedure and possible side effects???

I do have a Dr's appoinment scheduled for next week but any past experience's would be greatly appreciated.:)

Yes. I have had one. I had day surgery, just using a local anaesthetic and left to go home straight away.

I was told to rest for a few days afterwards and did not rest for long enough. I ended up getting a nasty infection and my scrotum swelled up to a nasty size. It was incredibly painful. The surgeon was doing his rounds at a private hospital near my home so I endedup going out there. He found a quiet ward and had a look, put me on antibiotics and it cleared up ok.

I don't know that this is very common and would probably not happened if I had rested as I was told.

Have had one (have two young boys and that's enough kids). It's day surgery. You can have local or general anaesthetic, either way it's over in about 20 minutes. You're numb for a few hours afterwards then it hurts obviously. It's not roll around the floor type pain though - as long as you do rest up for the few days afterwards like they say you'll be fine.

Most importantly it has no side effects for how you go between the sheets (once it stops hurting anyway :p ).

To be frank, I imagine that the feeling of the big O would be quite different (and less 'strong') if you're not able to ejaculate.

JD, Andre - your honest opinion?

You still [ejeculate]- you simply no longer have sperm in the [fluid](hopefully).

Definitely still ejaculate. Just no little swimmers, or motile sperm as they are called. The body still produces sperm and and also ejaculate. The vas deferens is the vessel that carries sperm from the testes to the semen. In a vasectomy, this is snipped and cauterised so that the passage is blocked.

The main problem I had was that not long after my vasectomy, I separated from my wife. A few years later, I remarried and my new wife wanted a child, as I did and we had to go through IVF. This was very expensive and the drugs used in the IVF made my wife quite ill. Seriously ill in fact. We have a great little boy as a result, but have stopped at one when we may have had another if we did not have to go through IVF.

It is pretty final.

Had one just under a year ago. They put me completely under for it (at my request).

Make sure you get your timing right. I had mine the day before a test match started, so spent the next 3 days on the couch watching the cricket.

And make sure you've got frozen peas in the freezer.

Was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. And it's nice to get a few days off from looking after the kids (and to get some sympathy).

You still shoot your load and there's no loss of feeling (I certainly wouldn't have gone in for one if there was much risk of that :p ). As noted you just don't have swimmers in the fluid.

It's a vasectomy, you aren't being turned into a eunuch.

We had two kids very close which was the plan. I then got the snip. A few years later we talked seriously about a reversal. Too expensive though. If we had of planned it better we would have frozen a bunch wigglers.

Has no affect on performance or desire.

Any bloke who doesn't get it done but allows his missus to get tubes tied, has a hysterectomy or keeps her on the pill as a means of contraception without good reason should have a good look at themselves.

I had exactly the same problem. Scrote the size of a tennis ball and that is no exageration. No long term damage though. I know of at 3 other guys this has happened to, not including JD or myself. Reasonably common I would say.

Actual op under a local was fine, honestly you can't feel anything. Took about 15 minutes all up.

Ended up missing the hawks 1999 night grand final because of it (and a week off work). As JD said, probably wouldn't have happened if I had rested. I tried to put a car battery into the Mrs' car about 3 or 4 days post op.

Actually, mine is normally the size of a tennis ball !

Did you watch your op HH? I did and found it fascinating.

I know a guy that literally cannot fit one of his balls into a schooner glass. It's ridiculous.

My Dad has had one. He was bed ridden for about 2 days. Seems fine. However, a reversal is expensive. If your girl has no major side effects from the pill, (& luckily mine doesn't) that's definitely the easier option..

Sounds like someone is under the thumb
