Was at work today... we had the TV on, but only managed to see about half the game in patches.

Bit frustrated with Van Burlo... it was good to see him getting the ball, but his disposal was VERY questionable. Out on the full once that I saw, and he missed his targets about 3 - 4 times that I saw. Did he redeem himself for the rest of the game?

How do you think that he is progressing?

His first couple of foot passes were impeccable but after that some disposals let him down. Is young and inexperienced but will be better for the run (100 minutes of AFL gametime and played the whole last quarter when the heat was on).

16 touches on a dangerous opponent (Headland), played a servicable game IMO.

16 touches?

That has to be his best game yet! :)

Yes, you are right, he is still young...

His disposal was very hit and miss today. Some passes were perfect, some were complete sprays, most noticeably his out on the full, and the one running toward goal and kicking it to a Freo player.
Deserves a game next week.

He didn't look out of his depth. He seemed to have a bit of time when he had the ball. He showed courage when required. I thought he took a big step in his development yesterday.

Very pleasing.

The Count had a good game in the context of his development.....good encouraging signs....what he did do was very classy.

Actually kicked the ball out on the full half as many times as Reilly and Edwards........ ;)

It was his best game for the crows but I was surprised to see him selected to replace Jason Torney, I did not believe that his SANFL form was that good and it certainly did not warrant a call up to the AFL. But saying that yesterday’s game he was good and should not get dropped when Stiff or JT came back next week or the week after.

His foot skills at times were poor (as was said) but also they were very good at times as he spun out of a pack and hit McGregor or Perrie with a nice pass over 30 meter that resulted in a goal. He also (and this has never been questioned) courage in one of hie first passages of play, during the first quarter and Nathan Van Berlo runs back with the flight of the ball and slide into the ball with 2 players coming at him. It showed courage and class well above his 5 games, so maybe the out on the fall was a lack of composure with the speed of the game and that will come with playing at that level.

His footskills were not poor.

Me and my mate (who had no idea who Van Berlo was) were both commenting on some of the nice direct passes he produced. He made a few stuff-ups, but so did every player, by and large his footskills were great.

That was VB's first 'fair dinkum' game of AFL footy, and he passed with flying colours IMO. He panicked a few times under pressure, but that is natural for a kid in his first season. He's here for the long haul and will no doubt keep his spot this week ahead of Doughty when Torney and possibly Stiffy return.

I agree

people tend to forget he was making the same mistake 100 game veterans were making

we all wonder why AFC doesn't blood young players, the moment they do the poor guys gets torn to shreds for not being a 100 game veteran straight up.
he got 16 touches which was quite serviceable and more than a few other players.

Remember guys that we didn't have to deal with Scott thompson starting out in his first 40 games over 4 years

I wonder who will make room for torney this week ?

Yep, exactly what I was thinking. His foot skills were excellent except for the OOTF. Most of his passes hit targets with some workburners to the forwards that they could not complain about.

IMO, I haven't seen anything to suggest he won't be a very good footballer. Ticks most of the boxes after just 5 games, good skills, good courage, excellent athletic ability...just needs some weight on his frame and about 30-40 games of AFL experience and we will be salivating.

Doughty hopefully but VB most likely unfortunately

Why was Jason Torney droped????

He had a great game I felt. Sure a few kicks went astray but as has been previously said it was his first decent run. His eyes would have lit up, heart would have been pumping as well as the adrenaline when he tried to kick the cover off the ball from fifty at the goals. That will happen. Who remembers Hentschels first game at AAMI I do. A lot worse than that performance by VB. Was exciting to watch him run around and get the decent stats next to his name. By no means a failure. Just needs to relax when having a shot. Saw roo run straight up to him after and a have a whisper in his ear.

The Count played a more than servicable game for a 19 yo first year recruit.
His disposal early was first class and poise and courage impecable.
He found it hard to keep the pace up later and everyone makes mistakes.
Dont be too hard on him as he will IMHO become a very good servant of wearing the tri colours (OF THIS STATE ;) .

Best game he has played for the club and I actually thought his foot disposal in general was VERY good. Yes he made 3-4 mistakes but he is an 18 year old playing AFL footy in his first year on an AFL list. Surely you've got to be happy with that especially considering he has been playing for a side that currently sits 2nd on the AFL ladder.

As he said - when he's right he's right :)

Good solid game from van Berlo (with a small v). He really contributed with some quality possessions. He must stay in the side next week. Even if Torney comes back, Reilly, Doughty or Skipworth should be dropped (in that order) ahead of him.
