We are addicted to drafting d class mids and half back flankers no matter what state the list is in. We are crazy in believing injury ravaged talls will suddenly be miraculously healed and there won't be any need to bring in replacements even when they are under our noses.
All of our problems are self inflicted , it's bloody infuriating.

What’s the obsession list managers have with half back flankers in the AFL? I don’t understand it at all what are the reasons? Must be some perceived logic behind it

It's going to turn into a 10 year build because of the older players we have lost (one way or another) and the massive amounts of development time we have lost on injured players.

Cam, Langdon, Neale or a 100% fit and committed Hogan or Ben King makes a massive difference. Hill I think is better going as Serong is superior overall.

Players that have lost significant development time due to injury:
Logue
Pearce
Sturt
Valente
Darcy (still a jet though so this one doesnt hurt)
Switta
Young
Tucker
Freddy

Way too many first and second rounders in that bunch. We'd be an immensely better team if all of those had played 50% of the games they missed.

All that and we didn’t just rip the bandaid off at the start

Im just praying they don’t try to shortcut it from here

Yeah I think we'll either stagnate here or go backwards a bit in the next year or two. Too many players in the 25-30 range that just never hit their straps fully.

I agree we need to cop our medicine properly this time.

Vent for the list management and in particular Peter Bell. His club status as a player means he escapes most of the criticism but his first hire was a list manager that he needed to move on after less than 6 months. Certain that hire set us back a year.

We won't lose Serong. He seems to love it here.

So did Lachie Neale, until he realised we were going nowhere while being courted by Brisbane. Then he couldn't pack his bags fast enough. Also the key word is "seems". Ultimately none of us know what motivates players except they themselves. Laughs and backslapping on the training track means zilch.

Think there is more to the Neale situation.

Nah, Neale is noticeably more reserved with the media. Maybe even a little coarse. Hard to read. I was still surprised but I don't think its the same thing.

Serong (like Andy) is transparent as **** (in a good way). Genuine kids way more focussed on getting better and doing their bit for the team. It's why from the start I was massive on Andy. Dude is a mental giant. Serong not to the same level but similar.

For me the most disappointing thing this year is the lack of a single victory against the head - where we were underdogs and came out and beat a much more fancied side.
In fact, over 37 odd games of Jlo, we have not beaten a single serious team at that time the game was played. Maybe Sydney this year. The Saints game last year as a stirring win but they turned out to be a bit shit in the end too. Also that sydney game in May was in Perth and we were both around $1.90 to win based on form leading up to it.
Most of the other bottom sides have had culture building wins like I described this season.
Adelaide beat Geelong and Melbourne. Hawthorn went up to the SCG and demolished the Swans as $5 outsiders.
North beat the eagles in perth (we can only dream 😥) and beat Carlton too.
Even the hapless Gold Coast had a rousing away victory against Richmond as massive outsiders.
We have pretty much lost every game we are meant to lose, and pretty meekly too. It’s like as soon as the tide goes against us the teams mentality switches to “oh well, we are supposed to lose this anyway. No big deal if we fizzle away here and lose by 30 or 40”.

I don’t know, I’m just so underwhelmed about this list, this coaching group, the mentality of this side in general.
There about 8 players who seem to care as much as us fans.
There’s a bunch who don’t give a shit.
And lowest of all, there’s a bunch who don’t look like they give a shit AND are also not good enough.
I would like to see these guys in particular moved out ASAP.

At least some of that development time shouldn't have been counted on anyway. Guys like Sturt, Valente, and Switta (at least) came to us wih doubts over their durability.

Curious as to who you think don’t give a shit ?
Not saying your wrong, just interested in your perception.

Some organisations are just destined to fail...

He had never played a full season of AFL footy and with no track record there were doubts about whether he would be durable enough for professional football.
That sounds like some incredible hindsight stuff. If you can show someone mentioning Sturts lack of a full season of football as an indicator he might have injury issues when he had no injuries before, I would be very very surprised.

Edit: Sorry Johnny Dalmas didn’t realise It was the vent thread, vent away

You could name plenty of players that have transferred from other sports in their 17th/18th year and have barely missed a game since being drafted.

Would’ve thought concerns around Sturt were more how difficult it’d be for him to get to the required aerobic capacity for AFL footy. I don’t believe he had many injuries prior to being drafted.

He’s had:
- Concussion concerns in 2019. Sat out the year which was probably the right call.
- A major ankle injury that meant surgery and a season ending injury.
- A major knee injury which ended his season.

Like I said about Pearce, I’m far more concerned about guys that seem to do the same injury over and over. Outside of concussion Sturt hasn’t done that and he hasn’t been concussed since year one.

He’s been frustrating but certainly isn’t time to write him off or question him as a selection as he’s really shown a fair bit when he has played.
