is the vfl/afl and the nswrl/arl/nrl the only sports competitions in the world, that began as a mayor state competition, that expanded into a national competition over the country??

Good question the distances and travel diifficulties between our states probably added to it, not to mention it being one of the earliest comps in the World back when the state comps began.

One thing thats the same the World over, I noticed in todays NRL GF, is a bad ump decision can totally screw a team/game.

Yes completely f**ked that game with the six more tackle signal from one umpire being ignored leading to a Roosters try. How can this happen in a GF? FFS

All sports begin in a place.

Rugby Union began in one school as a bastard offspring of soccer.

Rugby League is a bastard offspring of that.

Australian football is also an offspring of rugby union. Despite what the populist history revisionists tell us.
meant one competition that expanded, not the history of how it began

Actually Rugby is not a bastardisation of soccer they began at roughly the same time according to FIFA.

The contemporary history of the world's favourite game spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the Football Association in England was formed - becoming the sport's first governing body.
Both codes stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree.
