The Grand Final was played only two weeks ago but plenty seems to have happened since then.
Sandringham, Port Melbourne, Northern Bullants and Springvale have all got ads out looking for new coaches. Gerard FitzGerald was appointed to Springvale very late in the pre-season after missing a gig in politics but has left due to travel and the position being only part-time. Mark Williams from the Bullants also left his club. The other two - Graeme Yeats and David Dunbar - were apparently sacked.
Plenty of names have been floating around. Sandringham have apparently approached Peter Banfield who is currently at the Bendigo Bombers, and Andrew Dunkley who was mentioned in Scot Palmer's Herald Sun column today. It wouldn't shock if ex- Zebras player Mark Williams (from the Bullants) was also in the mix for their job.
Other candidates for the VFL coaching jobs would be Gary Hocking and Anthony Rock who have gained some experience in the TAC Cup, as well as Mick McGuane whose coaching record over the last few years, especially at Gisborne is faultless.
The turnover of coaches in the last two years has been amazing. Going into 2003 there were new coaches at about half the VFL clubs, and for 2004 there will be at least 4 out of 13 clubs with new coaches.
Apart from the coaching situation, there is plenty of discussion about the alliances. The Herald Sun today said Carlton and the Northern Bullants were close to calling off their divorce. I think the Richmond and Coburg alliance would still look to be dicey. The article said that Ken Gannon was meeting with Richmond on Thursday to sort out their issues. The VFL don't seem to want anymore change to their competition, but change seems a part of life when the VFL is structured the way it is.
Anyone else got any news about whats happening at VFL clubs?
