Thought i would see if there is much interest in Vic Harness amongst posters?

Starting with the Horsham Cup today, what do people like?

For mine I am Sam. Although the back marker off 20m I think he is good enough to upstage this. Impressive run last week in the Ararat cup where he overcame the 20m back mark allowing new driver/co trainer to salute Amy Tubbs. This horse has no troubles from standing starts and should tack on to this field quickly. $5 is good odds for a horse that won an interdom heat 12 months back.

Having a bit of a go at Horsham today.

4horse parlay. Finn Lee into Alto Soleil into Tanabi Bromac into Captain Courage.

First4 in the Cup. Tanabi Bromac to beat I Am Sam to beat Maffioso to beat Notaswethort.

Also gone Tanabi Bromac the win.

Good luck Fizzy.

Just went on harness website and Finn Lee is scratched. Now I got to find another one.....

Good luck CB, Finn Lee would of been a good start to your parlay.

In the trot if Speedy Naomi can get away cleanly and trot all the way i think the race is not beyond the Mannings.

Tanabi Bromac far to good. I Am Sam dissapointing for mine, tough doing it off 20m but was gone heaps far from home although battled on as per normal.

Who saw the SA Cup last night. Mister Zion too good in the end but what about the run of Smokin Up, absolutely massive. Didnt mind the call from Jimmy Jacques either, and I thought I loved my trotters...haha

Very passionate call from JJ!

Smoken up showed massive ticker though. Broke at the start three wide for two laps (thanks to mark peace not handing up the death seat on cincinatti kid) and still fighting like a bulldog in the straight.

I am sam a bit of a let down in the horsham cup, stepped away well but gone before they turned for home. Amy tubbs did the right thing going into the death early as Tanabi had no pressure applied. Tanabi Bromac with a good draw should give the hunter a fair shake as that run was super impressive.

The trot race was a blowout, Shardendo Lass????? Wins a T1+ at Ballarat Saturday night off 20m paying $17 then backs it up Sunday to lead all the way and pays huge

Love Jimmy Jacques, hope he calls at Mt Gambier on Friday Night (heats of the Cup) as noone is more passionate about their calling and he's a great bloke to have a chat to.

Tanabi Bromac was super, Maffioso ?, I Am Sam ok as he had to do a lot of work. Some very good runs in the race and some nice horses to follow out of the race. Givitaname should just win when he goes to Melton.

While Lance' drive on Smoken Up was an absolute 'Sav Rocca'. I reckon Mark Peace's on CK, was suspension worthy. Surely by now he realises that CK cannot do any work in the run, ie. Kilmore Cup. Can't help but think if they were leser proflie drivers, they'd be suspended. Also reckon Lance should take a break from driving SU for a while. He is becoming far too predictable in his tactics on him. If anyone wants to see a great drive from an underated driver, check out Grant Campbell's drive on Shardon's Rocket at Melton last Friday night. From 4 back the fence at the 600, to in a winning position at the top of the straight.

Maffioso pulled up lame & was stood down for 30 days, not sure why he ran?
Had 2 people tell me pre race they werent happy with him.

Agree there were a couple of eye catchers.

I backed shardons rocket at Melton...amazing drive...going down the back straight the last time thought i had no chance, love grant campbell as a driver i catch him most of the time.

Have to disagree here Brooklyn.

I realy rate Tanabi Bromac - I backed him as stated in a previous post in this race BUT Maffioso is just having some unknown problem at the moment. Next prep he will be better than Tanabi Bromac - as he has been for the past 3seasons.

Bendigo Cup this Saturday night - MISTER SWINGER !!

Also one I am going to follow through the grades is Onebyone. Thought her 3yo performaces should definetely see her win 3 or 4 this season. First up 3rd at Shep last week and is in the first at Melton on Friday but comes up against a good field but has nice draw in 3.

Across in NSW Cashel Manx is in at Goulburn 2moro. If Neil Day carried a whip and found a gap it would have won by 10metres last week at Wagga.

I own a horse in this age group so I feel qualified to comment here.
Ive written off Maffioso a couple of times & he's proved me wrong BUT I honestly feel he's climbed his mountains.
Clearly he has an issue but the fact remains he's an M7 without ever beating an open class metro field.Im not sure where they go with him,
he clearly doesnt stay & as a 7 he draws the back in virtually anything he races in.
To me he is Miss Finland, flat track age bully who was dominant but never took it into open class.

Im not bagging him,he was a super horse against his own age for 3 years running & won $600K.
But Ill be stunned if he is a Grand Circuit horse of any note

Oh yeh,not sure if you know CB but Bus To Harland has broken down badly & will miss 12 months minimum.

Yep, the M7 makes it very tough on him but he has only had 3 starts at 5 and if they werent happy with him before the race and he pulled up lame I still think he might, hopefully, surprise you! He was only beaten a length in the Vic Cup consolation 2nd up so I think he will be very competitive when right again.

Poor news about BtoH. Although the wraps I gave him were too big to be lived up to, he is still a nice horse and after last weeks first up win I was looking forward to following him :(

Mister Feelgood for me in the Bendigo Cup Sat. night. HUGE run last week! Just feel he is back in the form he showed last season. Bout time. Also impressed with a horse called Mach Class on its last run. Ran super closing sectionals from well back, and appeared to do it very easily. Check out the replay! In Sat. night as well.

Good discussion by an obviously well informed group of enthusiasts.

Bet for today at Charlton is R3 No.8 Larrikin Larry. I expect the 1 to start a short favourite so definite Exacta / Quinella. Might get $3.50 if lucky.

As HRW have ignored the meeting I have put my thoughts together ala Hutchy on tomorrow nights Mt Gambier meeting. As with all tips its all care – no responsibility, however I will provide some background to help find you a winner.

Track Data / Background

Mt Gambier race from late Nov thru until March usually on Saturday Nights. They get the SA Friday Night SKY slot for the heats and final of their Cup. With the exception of the Cup Final, Oaks & Derby it’s all restricted class racing. Having said that racing is very, very competitive and it most good judges believe it is harder to win a R0 here than at Globe Derby Park .

The track is a throwback to the glory days, a tight showgrounds style ½ mile circuit with minimum banking and short straights and NO sprint lane. Horses with gate speed that can race forward or those with good manners have a massive advantage here.

RACE 1

3. Big Slick 8. Drunken Jokers 2.Imacoolcloud 6. Yukon Queen

First Heat of the RO (Final next week). Big Slick is a first starter from the Finnis camp who won a trial here a few weeks back and would not have to be special to win this. Drunken Jokers was unlucky when it led and was BBQ’d by Imacoolcloud a few weeks back and has been thereabouts since. Given a good run thru he is a chance whilst the 2 & 6 can run in the placings in a race of few chances.

RACE 2

10. Malibu Grin 3. Baroda Bandito 8. Lucksonmyside 9. Palermo

A good 3YO race with most of these running in the Derby next Friday night. Malibu Grin ran 2nd in the Tatlow Final to Composed and won easily last week from Gate 1. He goes to 10 this week and I expect will be very short. He probably should win, however there is some depth in the race and you need to tread warily. Baroda Bandito is a half brother to Ananz and will probably find the front and be able to control the tempo of the race with MG having to circle them and race in the death. Plenty of good horses have been beaten here because of pace so it will be interesting. I really rate Lucksonmyside and you must respect the Tonkin runner in Palermo who has form in much better races than most of these. Also a chance to the 6. Barunga Twobob but the draw makes it difficult. Good race.

RACE 3
8. Keayang Princess 3. Rocket Science 2. Border Barnett 1. Collision Course

2nd heat of the RO and if anywhere near right Keayang Princess should just win. Not a lot to go on behind that so I have tried to look for horses that will settle upfront.

RACE 4

4.Adda Paternal Suit 2.Go Girlfriend 11.Dhoni 7.Den Of Inequity 5.Thingswedoforlove

1st heat of the Cup ($10k Final next week). Adda Paternal Suit is clearly the one to beat here, BUT it is first up from WA and is a 3YO taking on older horses and sees a stand under race conditions for the first time ever. On the flip side it is in the Tonkin yard and I’m guessing it’s here in Vic for the Derby and if so it will be winning this if it begins OK from the stand. Go Girlfriend can sprint well when held up for one run and she will most likely look to hand up to the 4 and hope for a gap late. Dhoni ran 2nd and 4th in the heat/final last year but goes back to 30M this year. In not an overly strong race I reckon he can get overcome the backmark and get to the death and run in the placings. If there is trouble up front both the 5 & 7 are next best.

RACE 5

3.Cosmic Cracker 1. Highwiew Congo 2. Special Tint 6.Jamaka Run.

The Oaks - not a strong race and not a lot of confidence. Tipping the 3 based upon the stable primarily but only just in front of the 1. 2 & 6 to run third and fourth but again not too confident.

RACE 6

3.Lot Of Lip 8.Historic Drive 7.Blackall Lad 4.Jilliby Jamilla 6 Pure Jasper 9. Takeabow

2nd Heat of the Cup. Lot Of Lip won well first up last week as a 4YO after a promising 3YO season. He won a Stand Trial here a few weeks back and on the basis of that effort he should be winning this. Historic Drive can make mistakes but he has a very good record and a safe beginning would put him amongst the placings. Ditto for Blackall Lad who made a mess of the stand at his only go but does sprint well and should be nearing peak fitness. Given a safe beginning he can figure in the placings. Jilliby Jamilla is the query being first up for a long time without a trial but on best form she would go very close. Pure Jasper got knocked over last weekend but has reasonable form as does Captain Courage. Takeabow is the class runner but off 30M against a reasonable field might be a big ask and a risk I'm prepared to take.

RACE 7

8.Devil Fish 5.Threes A Crowd 5.Flying Jasper 1.Peace Artist 2.Dakota Hanover

Going for some expected value here in Devil Fish. Draws the back line but I expect a speed burn for the lead from the 1,2 &3 which should enable him to get into a good spot to roll them down the straight. Danger is Threes A Crowd which won easily here last week but may have to do some work to get outside the leader again and if Devil Fish can get a good sit he might be able to outsprint him. Flying Jasper was involved in the unfortunate photo finish fiasco at Stawell where he led and handed up before finishing strongly to “dead heat” then be relegated to 2nd. He will look to lead however both the 1 & 2 begin well and there best chances of winning are if they hold the lead, thus an expected speed burn. Good race to finish.

Good Luck!

Good to see plenty of harness talk. With the bigger races approaching hopefully we can maintain 'some serious talk'!

I agree with Pecker in the bendigo cup, Mr Feelgood. Looks back to his best with a good win after sprinting over the top of quality field over the 1720 last weekend at melton. With the way i have been going lately this might be a good idea for everyone to against the former yank.

Best bet of the weekend Living on Fire, race 6 no.4 at Bendigo.

Trialled 4/1/10 and smashed a quality field (Monarco Man,Diamonds & Furs, Albert, Jacka, Mr Feelgood) running the last qtr 27.9, Last Half 57.1. I know most trainers dont take trials seriously but obviously Galea wanted L.O.F to blow the cob webs out. If he runs that last half on Saturday night get in line.

I had him marked a $2.00 chance in my market. Sterita should sit on his back from barrier one and run second I would think. The only chance of LOF getting beaten is if he goes too slow in front and Sterita simply outsprints him. If he winds it up from a fair way out to take the sting out of her legs then she can't win because she is very weak and very one dimensional now that she's reached metro level.

For what it's worth I'm actually in the Feelgood corner also. I think the sweeping turns at Bendigo where runners can often come wide with a trail on the last lap to win will really suit him. Power Of Tara, Sammy Maguire and Mister Swinger the logical dangers from their good marbles.

Guy's, am I the only one who is totally clueless when it comes to photo finishes at Melton? Is the camera right on the finish line or not? I had Make Waves at least running 2nd last night. Ran 3rd.!!!!

No its very tricky,Ive been sitting right on the line a couple of times & got it wrong.
Even Dan hasnt worked it out yet

The angle is tricky, because the track is on a 45 degree angle to the camera and where you stand to watch the races..

It's actually very disappointing they would build a brand new track and have a camera and live viewing angle like that, it should have been designed better in real terms.. because the racing there is top notch..

My feel for it is to bring the outside up by about between a short half head and a 1/2 head for each bike length and you are getting close to the result.

I was on Albert Jaccka last night and thought it was between him and the Captian Cullen because to me Make Waves was only just infront > but was about 4-5 bikes inside the other two

Few good races and a country cup or two over the weekend saw some good harness racing. Things that I'll be following from this weekend include:

- Bonavista Bay: looked back to his usual self when winning in WA from the front draw. Just like all other horses in that he can't burn the candle at both ends but he is impressive when the race is run to suit. In saying that I'll prob stay off him for a while until he loses a few and gets out to some decent odds again.

- Washakie: won really well and did it easy vs be good johnny and tip your hat at albion. Ran the mile in 1.54.9 and looks on the up. Reckon he is a big show for some of the big races coming up especially if he can get a barrier or 2.

- Mr Feelgood: big run at Bendigo when the front runners took the first few sectionals easy. Got the cart in but made ground on Sammy Maquire who ran 27.7 and 27.7 home so is again peaking at the right time.

Did anyone see or hear about the Harmey brothers up in NSW? Read the steward report a couple of nights ago and it sounds like a bit of a team driving gone wrong. NSW stewards didn't miss anyone judging by the penalties.

New regime in NSW pretty keen on stamping out any "Red Hots" behaviour, similar to the Qld Claimer race. Integrity of the sport is crucial to ongoing viability. No confidence = No betting = No industry.

Interesting trial winner at Maryborough Sunday,Yucatchim now with Tonkin/Stewart camp.
