News Victoria Park to get a facelift.

Is this the same $2m upgrade for Vic Park, with a focus on women’s footy facilities, announced in 2018? I think Yarra Council advertised a tender for this work early last year.

Be nice if it was another $2m, on top of the earlier $2m, but I’m sceptical. Fake news or old recycled news - who knows?

This refers to the earlier funding:

Yeah, looks like it could be the one and same. Maybe finally getting around to it.

So update the seating? That would be nice.

Appears to be a progress update - looks like they've gutted the locker rooms inside/below the Sherrin Stand. They were very much in need of an update.

The existing public seating has already been removed and reinstated to allow for works on the concrete.

EDIT: These works may explain why so little VFL footy was originally scheduled for 2020.

Politicans get good value out of their $2m funding.

They get to announce the $2m as as a promise before an election.
They get to announce the $2m when they end up funding it.
They get to announce the $2m when they put it out for tender.
They get to announce the $2m when work commences.
They then get to announce the $2m again when the work is actually done.

The ABC show Utopia walks the line between satire and documentary very closely!

Been watching alot of 1990's games during this time ...amazing in 94 we would play teams like hawthorn Sydney north and Richmond at vic park ..

Footy was so much better and the different grounds add so much more character to the game

Our vfl and AFLW should play ALL home games at vic park...

Btw how's geelong getting ALL home games at kardinia park...

Ppl hate carlton and essendon...I bloody dispose geelong cannot stand them ....hawthorn also due to jealousy as always been successful

I think improved lighting was also on the agenda. Hopefully we get some more twilight AFLW games and stop playing footy altogether at the Holden Centre
Also, I think every home game needs to be at vic park. While its good for the community to go to places like morwell and moe, but given the short season, more people to garner attendance in melbourne the better.

For anyone that doesn't have nostalgia attached to the ground, it's a dirty shithole that smells funny. There's no proper seats and the concrete is a tripping hazard it's so broken and uneven.

This upgrade is long overdue, we should play some preseason games there if it ends up looking good. Some actual seats would be a nice start but I don't think you get much with 2 million these days.

Millions were spent on Vic Park in the late 2000s, but there wasn't enough money, or justification at the time, for replacing the seats in the Sherrin or Ryder stands. This was before our VFL team returned to play there, and obviously pre-AFLW. I agree with you about the Sherrin Stand being on the nose - 'Eau de Sherrin' we call it. Sadly, I believe the stand is lived in and used by homeless people.

But I dont agree with your general statement about the place being a 'dirty shithole'. It beats many of the other former AFL grounds for spectator facilities and comfort, despite the old rigid timber seats. There is plenty of room undercover, the toilets function and are relatively clean, there are BBQs and landscaped areas, and you can access all parts of the ground. I prefer watching VFL footy there to, for example, Windy Hill or the Western Oval.

But it does need a working scoreboard!

A refurbishment of the Sherrin Stand will provide elite facilities for both Collingwood’s AFLW program and community levels of the women’s game.

The upgrade, which is expected to be completed in September, has received $2 million of funding from the Victorian Government and contributions from the AFL, the City of Yarra and Collingwood.

The project is part of a $45 million Victorian Government program to upgrade facilities for female footballers.

The Sherrin Stand is to be thoroughly modernised. State-of-the-art change rooms and recovery facilities are replacing amenities that have not been meaningfully improved for almost 50 years.

Collingwood’s AFLW and VFL teams play their home matches at Victoria Park. The Magpies Community Centre also operates out of the historic venue.

Apart from new facilities, the redevelopment gives the Collingwood AFLW program a degree of autonomy and flexibility. Much of the AFLW training program can be based at the ground, strengthening the relationship with Victoria Park the club has maintained for more than a century.

Kappa 3 questions

1. How old are you?

2. Do you live in Victoria?

3. What are your recollections of Victoria Park?

In it's heyday, the toilets used to block before quarter time and it was literally a stinking shit hole, but what a fabulous place.

A lot of footy clubs in Victoria would be trying very hard to get their female sides up and going with the promise of council/government cash to upgrade facilities to incorporate female change rooms etc.

Not saying the girls aren't worth it alone but the chance to get funding to upgrade facilities is definitely a nice carrot...

Might happen for the Women's Team but I have doubt for the Collingwood VFL/Reserve Team

With rumoured to be smaller lists and footy dept cuts to come I’m not even sure AFL clubs will bother fielding VFL teams next year.... and no money for a national reserves comp.

Probably see the return of alignments... in whatever form the VFL takes next year
