We see goal video reviews and even out of bounds discussions by umpires so why not have the reserve umpire watch the video and advise the onfield umpires?

I heard a comment on Sunday that the umpire does not have the elevated view that we have when we watch on TV. This was from a free kick goal given to St Kilda when on replay there was no contact. If it is better to umpire from the live video then why are we not doing it? Now I would not want this to become like American Football which can become bogged down with replay and analysis, but it could get rid of some stupid incorect calls which are put down to...... "umps are just human" mistakes.

What do you think?

I don't like the way it would interfere with the flow of the game.

If there was more video involvement I wonder if there's some way to introduce a "challenge" system like in tennis/cricket where each team has the opportunity to query say one call per quarter. Has to be called by the captain on the spot. If you lose the challenge the opposition gets possession.

A bit radical!

the problem is unlike cricket you can't really spend 5 minutes figuring out if some bloke made high contact or not for example during play....
(goal reviews the exception of course)
Correct. When the play has stopped anyway and we are all watching the replay while a player lines up the goals from an incorrect free then it could be done. Goal reviews are done this way. The umps are wired up and I can only see it as assistance. I just can't see it being worse than what happens now.

what if he's on the bench?
give the option to the coach? would be hilarious to see Chris and brad madly getting the 'T' going:D

Yeah. It might not be able to be applied to all calls, but with game likely to be closer than ever these days do we really want bad calls to decide a result?

Other thing is, what would it be like if all the calls where done by video and the onfield umps just pass on the call. You would be able to extend the working life of the good umps.

That would slow things down and hurt a side on a roll.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ump in the stand already speaks with them when they make an absolute howler; too late to alter the decision but enough info to find some way to 'fairly balance' things in the next minute or two. That's what I see time after time with very bad decisions.

I don't think player challenge would work at all. Leave it to the umps but just reduce the bad decisions.

Yes, I have thought about this also. How much involvement does the off field ump have? Or the AFL? Conpsiracy Theory goes here....
They stop play and give a free if a player gets a free off ball. I don't agree with the 2 wrongs make a right idea, it just confuses everyone.

So you'd have to freeze play anytime there's a potential free kick?

Yeah nah, it just won't work.
I guess the question would be... when you watch a game do you think you could give decisions which are more correct than the on field umps. Put team bias to one side thinking about this. By the way I will say I have seen some very well umpired games but this might be more about how the teams played the game.

To be clear about the topic. Not talking about doind a video review in general play, that would clearly not work. Umpiring from live video could work. Reviews only when play has stopped, no time is lost and it is fair to everyone.

OK. 10 seconds to go, scores level, free kick in goal square for head high contact, game over. On review while the kick is being taken it is shown that the contact was not from an opponent player....a bit like the free Selwood got when Smith hit him high.

Get them to adjudicate from the seat next to me. I see plenty of frees that Geelong don't get paid and far too many frees the other team get that simply aren't there! My seat is the best spot in the arena to make the correct call. It's uncanny but my seat is always the best.

;)
Do we think umpires have bias as well? Stevic....?

So an umpire is parked in the stands in front of a live feed and he can call a stop to play when he sees something wrong? I guess that could work.

I can't see any difference in what they try to do now with the onfield umps. The excuse is always...sorry I did not see it...

If they'd had video reviews in the maternity hospital, you would have needed another avatar.
The four time winner of the WA Sexiest Man in Footballs Media award says otherwise.

The AFL can't get the goal review cameras in the right spot for the reviews that are in play now.

How the **** are they gonna get an in game review system right?

Now, that said, I think the OP suggestion is not a bad one, nor the idea of a live real time off field ump watching the live feed with the ability to comment/add perspective to on field matters. I think the limit however has to be only comment on decisions made in the field.

If something gets missed, play on like normal. The 4th ump so to speak could not make a decision that had not been made on the ground.

However, if there is a howler - like Sels high free when Zac Smith collected him, that could be interrupted and deemed a ball up.

Another example would be DOOB. 4th ump could not overide that as its an interpretation rule. Rushed behind he could as the footage would allow the mechanics of the 9m space to be better viewed.

Its a mine field IMO but an interesting thought however impractical.
