Now I know there are a few gamers with taste in here who own and enjoy their Gamecubes.....
If you haven't played Viewtiful Joe, then I suggest you order a Freeloader and the Japanese version of Viewtiful Joe NOW! (or wait another month or so and get the US version if you have to)
Awesome old-school gaming heaven.
Remember back when games were cool?
Remember when you'd buy a new game, play through the first level (which would take all of 3 mins), die at the first boss, and then try it another 500 times (from the start of the game) until you got past it?
Each time you'd attempt it, you'd do a little bit better....
....until you finally cracked it.
This game has that. (if you play it properly in "adult" mode - "kids" mode is too easy and ruins the fun. Yes - adult is hard, but is much more fun trying to work out how to beat certain parts)
The controls + animation in this game = perfect.
For those who don't know, Viewtiful Joe is a Capcom game which is basically a 2D beat-em-up. (kinda cell-shaded 3D graphics with 2D gameplay). Think "Double Dragon" style gameplay with high jumping.
Joe is a normal everyday dude taking his chick to the movies when they get sucked into the actual movie by the "villain". His chick becomes the villain's (quote) "OBJECT OF MY REVENGE!", whilst Joe becomes VIEWTIFUL JOE - the hero - who can (when powered up, which is most of the time) slow down 'time', move at insane speeds, and zoom in on the action. (amongst other things)
The game rarely stops - it's just fight after fight. No annoying cut scenes and rubbish (I'm only up to the 2nd level though) and just contant beat-em-up action.
I'd call the gameplay a cross between an old-school 2D beat-em-up and the Capcom Street Fighter series - big crazy moves, high jumping, fighting in the air, heaps of visual effects, etc.....
It's the whole "movie-within-a-game" twist that makes the game really interesting though, and that's where the "effects" like slowing down time, moving at mach-speed etc come into it - the more guys you beat up in a 'combo' style move, the more the crowd (who are watching the movie) cheer, and the better chance you have of getting a "VIEWTIFUL!" rating. (which is extremely satisfying in that old-school kinda way)
Still images don't do this game justice - to see it in motion is something else.
And then to PLAY IT is something else again as the controls really are perfect and completely original.
Game of the year so far for me. (and like I said, I'm only up to the 2nd level!)
Not bad for a "kiddy" console, 'eh?
Come on Gamecubers - you owe it to yourselves to import this game.
