Virtual Memory Overload!

Hello,
I have a toshiba a100 i think..
Anyways that doesnt really matter.
Over the last couple of days i have been
recieving pop-ups saying that my virtual memory
is all being used and that the computer is increasing it.
This isnt really a problem but the new problem is that my
computer is starting to run considerably slower then usual
and some programs i have downloaded arent being able to used
because it says that the memory isnt there??

Is there anyway i can fix this, i have started by moving about
1.5gb of music onto a portable hard drive should that do the trick?

Virtual memory is your RAM nothing to do with your HDD unless you are down to less than 5GB left on the HDD and windows can't write a page file. in this case delete some pron.

turn the beast off. (not just a re-start)

restart it

it should run OK

if not

crtl-alt-del and see what's running

stop things that are not needed

if that doesn't solve it

you probably have RAM problems.
turn it off
if you have 2 sticks of RAM, take one out. (underneath middle)

start it again. see how it runs. if still stuffed swap the ram rinse repeat

if you don't have 2 sticks of RAM(well that sux)
try and find some
put in new RAM, try again
if that doesn't work

Def a RAM problem...what are your specs? Good idea to have at least 2gig of RAM these days.

Virtual memory is space reserved by Windows on a hard drive to supplement dynamic RAM. The Paging File will have priority over the writing of any data.
That said the problem should be solved for less than $50 by purchasing 2GB of notebook RAM.
