When i try and do a full scan of my harddrive the virus scanner will freeze and my computer will automattically restart on me.

This is a real issue as my virus scanner indicates i have viruses but will not clean them until you do a full harddrive scan, which i cant do. I have tried several different anti-virus programs, including, VET, Norton, PC-Cillin and currently using AVG.

Any suggestions of overcoming this problem would be appreciated.

in Internet Explorer, try going to the following sites to do an online virus scan:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Your virus scanner might say their is a virus on this site, its likely a false alarm as the definition pack has a signature of a virus, but is used for detection.

and a trojan scan:

http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/trojanscan.asp

if that doesn't work what virus scanner you running? what virus is being picked up with it?

If its restarting on you, change the setting that says 'restart windows' in the system failure section of the 'start up and recovery options' bit in the system icon in control panel.

Then when it scans and crashes on you, you can read on what file it's crashing on. It may be some driver for a device that can simply be unplugged.

The file it crashed on will be indicated towards the end of the top-most line.

dont know if you are: but dont have two different virus scanners running at the same time - they can mess each other up.

But Jim is right, disable the auto restar, then read the warning
