BREAKING NEWS: The current AFL host club alignment appears certain to be scrapped next week after the General Managers voted 7-2 to completely abolish the set-up.
A vote will be taken by the WAFL club Council of Presidents next week to dismantle the current structure, which is expected to see the reverse order draft back in vogue with the Dockers aligned to 5 WAFL clubs and the Eagles aligned to 4clubs.
This decision will cease the current East Perth/ Eagles, and South Fremantle/ Dockers arrangement.

A good idea for the WAFL. The way it was going, it would be an East Perth/South Fremantle GF every year. Not good for the WAFL.

A bad idea for the Eagles and the Dockers. It would be better if the players who weren't in the senior teams were playing along side their AFL team-mates in the WAFL.

If the two sides of the story are weighed up, it would be much better to sever the Eagle's alignment with East Perth and the Docker's alignment with South Fremantle. If it was kept how it is at the moment, the WAFL, and WA football would suffer greatly in the long run due to a lop-sided competition, and thus create a adverse externality for the Eagles and Dockers.

The Eagles and Dockers will just have to make do with their players playing at different WAFL clubs.

Do I have to ask which 2 clubs voted to retain the status quo?

I notice that Claremont was minor premier but bowed out of the finals in straight sets - can this be attributed to the alignment of SF and EP with the 2 AFL clubs?

Every now and then someone over here starts squawking about getting Crows & Power reserves teams in the SANFL, or aligning 2 SANFL clubs with them. I hope that the powers that be in SA are smart enough to learn from the experiment which has happened in WA.

I am a supporter of the West Coast Eagles. I follow West Perth in the WAFL. Probably above all I follow football and I am thoroughly opposed to the Host Club alignment.

It has wrecked the WAFL competition and damages the future of football in WA.

I also question whether in fact it has actually helped the Eagles (or the Dockers). I see no evidence of this. Certainly on-field performances at AFL level have been deplorable by both clubs since this Host Club arrangement has been in place.

Perhaps the young players play better together at East Perth, but whether it makes them better as individual players capable of taking the next step is highly arguable.

Both teams (EP & SF) win too often and too easily and IMHO the young players at the WCE do not appreciate how fortunate they are. I have seen little sign of character being developed - though I am confident that the arrival of John Worsfold will go a long way to fixing that particular problem.

interesting question

Uncle Steve,I don't think the alignment had anything to do with Claremont going out early. When South played them they{South} could not play most of their Dockers players. The majority of them were kids who had come through South. The more senior players were ineligible to play.
It is a very touchy point here as to how the AFL players should be distributed,on one hand if the players are sent to two sides regardless of which sides there will be uproar from the other clubs. If they are sent all over the place the two AFL clubs will be up in arms.
In some ways it is very hard for the the coaches of the two clubs to settle the way they want the team to line up and where to line them up.

Good comments as usual VOR and Anchor man, Uncle Steve the WAFL would be better of with out host club set-up.
Though the Royals did well with mainly there own players having the young Eagles must have been an advantage.
I have not heard anything in our media so this must be a real inside story.

tjara,I think the Royals had far more Toasters playing for them than the Bulldogs had Dockers.I can't recollect the two teams off hand but EP appeared to be better served by the number of AFL players than the Doggies. Not that I am using that as an excuse as we were beaten by the better team on the day[damn mumble mumble mumble].

From WC there would have been:

Antonowicz - delisted
Haynes - retained
Humm - retained
Munro - retained (did he play though, could have been injured)
Buzsan - rookie list
Turnbull - looks set to be delisted

From Freo there would have been:

Hayden - rookie list
Siegert - rookie list
Ugle - rookie list
Thornton - has he been delisted?

Not 100% sure on all of those either, could have been a couple more like Cunningham?

Dunno...

Vis

Munro did play - and very well too.

Don't forget the magnificent Travis Gaspar, an Eagle in Bulldogs' clothing, who was an important player for South Freo.

Also, Freo lost Mott through injury and Clucas through suspension before the game, plus Atkins was on one leg after the first quarter and they were hopelessly undermanned against a strong Royals line-up with young Eagles, plus Turnbull, Symmons, Wheatley, Barnard, Perry etc etc etc. South could hardly get the ball over the halfway line after half time.

Ok thanks for that. I couldn't watch it at all and my mate and I had to rely on the radio which was a bit hard. Totally forgot about Gas, pretty much BOG for Souths wasn't he?

Visro,Cunningham plays for the Tigers.
VOR they certainly were to strong for the Bulldogs and thoroughly deserved to win but they are one team that I have hated for many years and will continue to do so.I don't know who I hate more The Gummies from the Aquarium or East Perth.
