Have been some rumours that the WAFC is trying to instigate some more drastic moves. Talks of merging South and East Fremantle or Claremont and Subiaco. They would also scrap the reserves and hand control of the colts over to the AFL

There is more chance of Essendon and Collingwood merging than there is of South and East Fremantle. No chance in hell that will happen.
The WAFC are acting in the best interests of the AFL instead of WA football as usual, lots of noise but most of it won't happen.

Only a matter of time before AFLWA and AFLSA happens. The AFL has their greedy fingerprints all over it and won't be happy until they control all football in Australia

It looks as though it is inevitable but I can see a breakaway WAFL league happening, the clubs are sick of being treated as guinea pigs.
The licences to the Eagles and Dockers are still a huge bargaining tool, they are worth a fortune and won't be anywhere as easy to get there hands on as the SA ones.
It is easy for the AFL to run footy in non footy states, much harder in WA and SA as they have huge historical leagues to protect and future proof.
Interesting times ahead.

Just had a quick peruse over the last few pages after I heard of the rumours of mergers and the plans for the Colts. As an avid sanfl supporter it seems every 5 years there's another barrage to the fabric and integrity of the state leagues from the AFL. It's a cancer and it won't stop until there's a monoculture of footy in this country, no diversity, just the same bland media driven shit. It's already here.
The advent of AFL reserves teams in the SANFL has been dire when it comes to traditional clubs crowds and memberships. Even a supposedly proud sanfl club like Port (not that they're an sanfl club anymore but just a whored out AFL reserves team) struggle to attract 3k to a home game, when my team Sturt play at Alberton it's not unusual for us to have an easy majority of supporters there.
The promise of more media attention is a ruse, the attention is mainly directed towards the two reserves teams, it's a slow death by a thousand cuts. No one seems to care, least of all the state footy commissions. They're the politicians of Australian Rules, they grease their own arses.
I've argued for a long time that the salary cap in state leagues need to be honoured, it's hard to do this with reserves teams involved, but the easiest way is to ban them from finals, it's a no brainer. Everyone play for the minor premiership then the reserve teams can **** off. All three traditional comps have been majorly compromised come finals by AFL reserves teams. It has to stop.
I hope the recent proposals for the traditional clubs in the WAFL don't happen, if it does it will be a travesty to footy history and another dagger to all proud historical clubs.

If anyone has been following the juniors, South and East as of this season practically merged anyway.

Edit/

If they're going to merge basically every competition from 12-8's (which is really the time kids start getting serious about their footy). Then honestly it's already the beginning of the end, if they'll consider that alignment.

It's only practical that eventually a merger occurs there, and what's to stop the logical conclusion of it fully happening.

If you've got candle burning at both ends, as in the bottom rung is merging and the WAFC is considering it from the top. It does seem an inevitability.

They had the CEO of the WAFC on ABC this morning talking about 'parameters' 'target audiences' 'breakthrough areas' and other corporate speak. What a shower of shit they are.

He is just a puppet for the AFL.
They need to breakaway from the AFL, but as the clubs themselves don't seem to care and won't fight for their own league and existence then it's hard for us the members to feel sorry for them.

Dumb. Need to merg Colts and WAFL clubs into an under 21 comp. This other stuff is just not getting where this level of footy needs to make itself relevant again in new century football landscape.
