Well with the season starting this week i thought it would be good if we started a little topic here on the WAFL.

Friday March 19th
South Fremantle v West Perth - Fremantle Oval - 7pm

Saturday March 20th
Perth v East Fremantle - EFTel Oval(Lathlain) - 2:15pm
Peel Thunder v Claremont - Rushton Park - 5:40pm
Subiaco v East Perth - Leederville Oval - 7:00pm

Bye
Swan Districts

So a couple of decent games there in South Freo playing last years Premiers West Perth at Fremantle Oval in a night game and Subiaco v East Perth at Leederville to start the co-tenancy.

The lights at Leederville are pretty decent, a couple of darkish spots on the far side but it looks good.

East Perth have been shaky in pre-season (like Hawthorn) but we won our last game against the garlics. It was a hard fought 32 point victory and Adam Pickering, Andrew Merrington, Paul Ridley, Troy Wilson and Troy Kirwen all looked good.

Poor disposal is still hampering us but we were hard at the ball all night on Saturday last week which will hopefully hold us in good shape for this week. Maybe a even a selection headache for the selectors with the quality at hand.

Also...
Brent Cowell/Paul Ridley to win the Sandover
Paul Ridley to lead the goal kicking on 68 goals

Round 1

East Perth rarely win pre-season games regardless of how well they end up going the coming season.

However certainly whilest their form was very much lacking for their first two games they did rest a lot of senior players. In saying that however I still think they might be a bit underdone agaist Subi.

It will be interesting to see who they pick to play given that Vardy et al have finally shown some form.

How does everyone think South fremantle are going to go this season?

Well from footygoss this is their losses and gains for the coming season

Gains:
Ryan Murphy (Fremantle) Matthew Capuano (St Kilda) Chris McLaren (Koroit, Victoria) Toby McGrath (Essendon) Jai Shires (Sthn Districts, Darwin) Stephen Sinnott (Camperdown) Mark Briant (Peel) Chris Tindale (returns) Chris Fouracres (Manjimup) Simon Webb (Port Hedland)

Losses: James Byrne (Geelong, VFL) Jacob Surjan (Port Adelaide) Ricky Mott (Carlton) Matthew Moody (Brisbane Lions) Marty Atkins (retired) Tom Bottrell (retired) Kingsley Hutcherson (retired) Dean Ercegovich Michael Brown (work committments) Nathan Turvey (retired) Jamie McMahon (Kununurra) Brodie Kuyer

You have gained McGrath and Capuano but have lost Mott, Atkins, Moody,Bottrell and Brown.

I think South Fremantle will be around the 4-5 spot but i think Capuano is going to have a big say in how your season is going to go.

For starters, with the team we had last year and throughout our proud history, I think South has been the perennial underachiever. It was repeated last season. We had a very strong team that just wasn't committed for reasons or another.

Last season did show us the future. Northey played alot of the younger guys which will benefit South Fremantle in the long run. Traditionally we are very strong at junior level through colts, and the past few premiership seasons are starting to come up with colts to league transition players. Guys like Gerard Wilkie, Clint Jones, Kane Bebbington, Craig Jovanovic, Jaymie Graham and so forth look like holding the club in good stead.

People rave on about Moody going to Brisbane. He wasn't a loss to the club IMO. He rarely played a league game and if he did it was for 5 minutes. He was always going to be drafted anyway. Jacob Surjan to Centrals and Port was the one that I think will provide the major loss for us this season of the young brigade. He was a regular in league at the age of 17 and looked the goods for the future.

On a senior note, covering Byrne, Mott, Atkins, Brown, Bottrell and Ercegovich will be difficult through a lack of experience and drive through the middle and down back. I have no doubt the younger guys will be able to step up into the role, it's just a matter of time. The injection of Capuano, McGrath (who always plays well in Souths colours) and Mclaren should be extremely helpful.

To be honest with you, the senior players in the team look solid this year lead by Brad Bootsma. I think this season we have a healthy mix of youthful exuberance and seasoned campaigners.

The underlying point that sticks in my mind is I hope the players find the desire to play for each other and the jumper this season. If not, we'll probably be nowhere again this season, if so South is a can of worms, with potentially an extremely bright future through our youth.

The biggest asset this season I must admit is John Dimmer. Educated and approachable, his knowledge will surely rub off on the players and inspire them to achieve rather than underachieve.

Change the word East with South port!! meaning South Fremantle rather than the goldfish finishing 2nd ;)

South Freo

As has been said South have a habit of underperforming. But I agree if anyone can make them turn it around its new coach John Dimmer.

What does everyone think about Swan Districts this year?

Personally with Adam Lange, Brady Anderson, Shane Beros and David Snow back in the fold (even though he is now like 35) i think they can form a strong midfield and with Hansen and the other talls they have in the forward line i think they could be a strong unit this year.
