In the Herald-Sun Gary Ablett was given the best on the ground.

On checking the stats he had 7 kicks and 6 handballs. Of those 13 possessions only 3 were in the first half. Did he warrant the best ?
Looking at the stats for some others.
Peter Street had 10 possessions and 47 hitouts and was given second best.
Darren Milburn 22 possessions spread evenly over the game third best.
Paul Chapman 17 possessions, 14 in the first half, did not rate as one of the best 6.

I know stats are not everything but if Ablett got his stats in the first half and Chapmans were in the second half would he have been given BOG?

Ablett was given the votes because he was the matchwinner. He broke the game open in the second half.

I'm comfortable with it.

Milburn, Kelly, Scarlett, Ablett, Street and Bartel would have been amoungst my best players on the weekend, but there were contributions from most players at different stages of the game. Chapman was good in the first half, Steve Johnson chipped in with a couple of goals, even Sanderson played fairly well.

Ablett is and always will be special

Saturday, we saw some his magic...

Definitely deserved the B.O.G tag for mine ;)

Ablett definately got my vote for B.O.G. He won us the game and was good at crucial moments of the game. His three goals were fantastic.

I would have went with street. I know Stkilda dont have a ruck, but to ruck all day and beat 3 (?) guys and get 47 hitouts is a fair effort. I also thought that darren Milburn did an awesome job on StNick, while still getting possesions. I'd have them at one/two (not sure which way) and Ablett 3.

Ablett needs to get 10 possies every week and he's BOG apparently. Kicked some handy goals, but Geelong had 4 quarter contributors, not just one.

Lenny Hayes for mine, Milburn a close second.

St Nick farts and he's considered a "superstar".Harvey can get 20 possesions and is considered B.O.G,yet his opponent can get 30 and no one will mention Harvey lack of defensive skills.

It is fast becoming clear that statistics are redundant. If Ablett gets 10 possessions, kicks 4 goals, sets up 3, and intercepts a pass to an oppostion forward who is by himself in the goalsquare, is that not more valuable than a Jess Sinclair collecting 30 possessions mopping up at half back (at least half of those would be short chips and give and go handballs as well)? Begs the question doesn't it.

On the topic of handballs, what about Dermott Brereton on MMM on Saturday remarking to the statistician that 'whatever amount of possessions Ling gets, halve it' because Ling gives many short handballs. Well what does Scott West do ferchrissakes? Moron. Anyway...

I think Dermott was referring to the fact that Ling will handball to someone, then get the ball back for another possession. Either way, it's a ridiculous argument as lots of good players do that, including Robert Harvey.

Stats are not always the one and only story. While in this case I wouldn't have voted Ablett the BOG, he was definately one of the most influencial on the ground.

According to Saint Nick Riewoldt, they smashed us on the stats sheet and if you had not have looked at the scoreboard you'd have thought they'd have won. Well, not when you do what we normally do and bomb the ball into the forward line to see it come straight back out.

amusing stuff that was.

Those are average stats for Riewoldt. Nothing to write home about - that's what he does.

But how effective was Roo? Not overly, dare I say it. Milburn played him closely, stifled him from running amok, and gathered a host of possesion himself over four quarters.

Underrated player. Love to have him.
