And Now, The BBC's Sports Personality Of The Year Is ...
FORGET Jonny Wilkinson - Leeds United fans have thrown Michael Duberry into the reckoning for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award, writes PAUL DEWS.
United fans are bombarding the BBC's website in the hope of securing the United centre-back a place on the short-list for the prestigious award.
A spokesman for United fans organisation WACCOE said: "Dubes has had a lot of stick over the past few years but he is doing well at the moment. This is a show of our support for him as he is the sort of person who always gives 100 per cent for the team."
Duberry, who had an outstanding game against former club Chelsea last weekend, is taking it all in his stride and says he will be buying a new suit just in case he is invited to Sunday's award ceremony in London.
Duberry said: "I find it funny. It's a good craic and I'm all about having a good craic. I'd like to thank the people who've voted. It's a nice touch because you don't know how the fans take to you. At some stages I've had a bit of grief, but the fans have been brilliant and that's great."
Michael Owen and David Beckham were the last two footballers to win the award, but this year's ceremony is expected to be dominated by rugby union.
World Cup hero Wilkinson is odds-on favourite and Duberry is hoping to meet the man of the moment.
"Hopefully I'll see him Sunday," he laughed.
