To a huge degree you are correct.
Its not pure decoration by any means however, if you are working with your hands for instance you have to put down whatever you are doing, wipe your hands, dig around in your pocket, pull out your phone, swipe the screen, squint at the screen to try and see in the blinding sunlight, find some shade, swipe it again... and discover you are out of battery.

Wearing a watch you just glance at your wrist.
