Fresh from his 36-possession game on Sunday, the man with one of the best set of hands in the AFL, Jobe Watson, today signed a new two-year deal with Essendon. He is now contracted to the end of the 2010 season.
The rapidly improving Watson, 23, has played 64 games for the Bombers since being taken as a father/son selection with pick 40 in 2002.
Team manager, David Calthorpe, said Watson is developing into a damaging ball winner and club leader.
“In the past two-years he has improved considerably as a player and, at just 23-years-old, he will be a key part of the Essendon midfield for years to come,” Calthorpe said.
“At 191cm, 88kg and with superb hands and vision he has the strengths to cause opposition teams serious problems. We believe he will play a big role in our next premiership tilt.
“This year he was added to our leadership group for the first time which shows how highly he is rated at the club. He has the respect of the playing group and many of our younger players really look up to him.
“One of the club’s pillars is heritage and tradition and, with Jobe’s father Tim also having a distinguished career in red and black, this contract is a significant and important boost for Essendon.”
Watson leads the club handball count (145) and is fourth for tackles (39).
His new deal follows a number of recent contract signings including David Hille, David Myers, Henry Slattery and Leroy Jetta.

“We have a lot of faith in our young, developing list and it’s encouraging to see players like Watson and Hille show that they are committed to the direction we are taking,” Calthorpe said.
“Those two players have seen the rapid development of David Myers, Kyle Reimers, Sam Lonergan, Bachar Houli and others first hand and they want to be part of an exciting new era at the club.”

Great news:thumbsu:

Is learning to kick one of the clauses?

Hope so, because he has the ball getting & handball skills of an elite midfielder, and if he can dispose properly by foot then I think he would be twice the player.

Great to have him for another 2 years!

The game against Freo was his best game of his career. Dominated the clearences, 17 hard ball gets, foot skills were good.....

I've been a critic as well for his kicking, but against Freo his kicking was a highlight. So the evidence is there that he is improving, just has to be consistent now.

Most inside midfielders who play a similar role to Jobe are bad kicks.

Ball, Simpson, Kirk, Kerr, Murphy, Haselby, Corey are a few who immediately come to mind.

I still shudder everytime he goes back to take his kick.

Back is the most important word in what you've just said.

When he kicks on his back step, he gets himself in trouble.
Also when he fails to kick through the ball.

He's actually a good long kick of the footy and is very good at kicking to angles.

It's when his momentum isn't moving forwards that he kicks under it.

I think we'll also find that a game like Sunday will do wonders for his confidence in his foot skills, he has seemed to suffer from it.

Very underrated in the football world. Diesel Williams proved that by not kicking often you could be elite. His magnificent around stoppages and if he does learn to kick consistently he will be a very powerful force for years to come. Love his work.

His kicking is less of a concern that it once was. I'd like him to back it a bit more. though.

As far as being an in and under ball getter goes, he has few peers IMHO and is exactly what we need. :thumbsu:

I think his disposal was better on the weekend. An under rated player for sure.

This is hardly "news" though - would he have gone anywhere else?

I want to here the news that Scotty is given the 2 yr deal that he deserves.

Yes - Go Jobe!!!:D:D:D

Scrounging through old receipts, etc... last night I found my bet slip from January for Jobe to win the brownlow. Probably won't happen this year - but eventually my annual January Jobe loyalty will pay off!

If the bloke could kick he would be elite...easily

His kicking has improved vastly over the last couple of years.

Both true comments - which combined suggest he is not far off becoming elite.

In Watson, McVeigh & Stanton we are starting to see an experienced and capable core for our young midfield that can lead us forward for many years to come. Best thing is that IMO they are all very different player types who combine well together.

Hopefully they continue to lead & influence the rapid development of young mids like Houli; Lonergan; Hocking; Hislop; Myers; Remiers; Monfries; Jetta; etc... to form our next premiership midfield.

Don't forget Winderlich! He was a best midfielder last year until his injury setback. This season has been just a nightmare for him... Will definately win his spot back next season with a huge pre season under his belt.
