Jobe Watson, the son of one of Essendon’s favourite sons, Tim, will definitely be drafted by the Bombers under the father/son rule.
Essendon will use its round three pick in the national draft, and enable Jobe to begin his AFL career under the same man - Kevin Sheedy - who coached Tim and the Bombers to three premierships.
Watson, 17, has been playing for Xavier College, where he is vice-captain this year, the Sandringham Dragons, and represented Victorian Metropolitan in the Teal Cup.
Young Watson said he was “absolutely thrilled” to be picked up by the Bombers, but that he didn’t necessarily see himself playing the same kind of game as his father.
“Not really. I saw a photo a couple of weeks ago, and thought maybe I do look a little bit like him. But I don’t have some of his attributes that I would have liked. But I enjoy people comparing (us) because he was a fantastic player,” he said.
Jobe, a year 12 student, will not begin training with the senior squad until next year. He will undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in a finger in September.
“I’m not sure how to handle it. You can’t really believe that it’s true … you think is it really me? Am I really here? I think that’s what it’s going to be (like) for a couple of months.”
Sheedy commended Tim and his wife Susie for supporting Jobe’s footballing aspirations.
“I wouldn’t like to be comparing him to his Dad. But if he wants to play like Roger Merrett or someone like that, I’d be only too pleased,” Sheedy said.
At 15 years of age, Tim was the second youngest player of all time to make his senior début. He won Essendon’s best and fairest award in 1980, 1985, 1988 and 1989, and captained the club between 1989 and 1991.
After retiring at the end of 1991, Tim played in his third premiership side after making a remarkable comeback in 1993.

Will be good to see a Watson running around wearing the red and black next year, even if it's in the 2's. Especially good as he look's so much like his dad in the way he speaks and run's, etc.
