Didn't he do some of the recruiting of Freo when he was there, they been a disaster since day 1,what is it 14 seasons for 2 finals so far.

Looking at our Team, hopefully we not like the Dockers or the Saints, people say they have a great list but do crap.

2004 draft looks like being a draft of more duds then good, that's for most clubs so it was more a dud for most clubs except the Hawks and Richmond.

Pagan and his bunch of recycled did more damage then good in my opinion winning 10 games, there was a chance of getting Franklyn,Deledio,Lewis or Griffen.

We Took Jordan Russell as the not duds,Brett Deledio,Jarryd Roughead,Ryan Griffen,Jordan Lewis and Lance Franklyn had been taken before him.

Richard Tambling was already taken also early, who is as good as Jordan but both not great. It was lucky we didn't get Tom Williams and John Meesen. It was a shame we didn't take Angus Monfries or Nathan Van Berlo.

Luke Blackwell,Anthony Raso and Chris Bryan all ended up delisted or moved off. Adam Hartlett isn't delisted but faces a tough battle,We could have taken Chris Knights,Henry Slattery and Luke McGuane.

2005 Draft seem like a bit of talent there, everyone would have taken Marc Murphy at 1. Josh Kennedy was a poor choice at pick 5,probably play about 50-80 games, probably just over 50. There was plenty to take before him,but that doesn't matter as we got Chris Judd for him now.

Paul Bower is our next pick, seems to be improving,so that's probably a tick for Hughes only Sam Gilbert could have been taken or Ryan Hooper.

The next guy is Jake Edwards, has to pull his finger out this season, hasn't done much,we could have taken Ryan Hooper,John Anthony,Alipate Carlile,Clint Bartram and Andrew Swallow and i forget Million Dollar kid Robert Warnock, lol.

2006 Draft,we took Bryce Gibbs, while most would.Shaun Hampson our next pick was a huge gamble, will see how he holds up this year.I guess we know a lot about the other guys after him this Season if they going to be pretty good.Tyson Goldsack,Leroy Jetta,Lindsay Thomas,James Frawley and Shane Edwards could have been taken as well as Shaun Grigg before Hampson.

Shaun Grigg our next pick, looks like being one of our best we have taken without being number 1 on any list.Kurt Tippett,Gavin Urquhart,Shane Edwards,Tyson Goldsack,Lindsay Thomas were all available after him.

Mark Austin our next pick, needs to improve a bit this year,we could have taken Bachar Houli,Colin Garland,Kyle Reimers,Daniel Connors and Josh Hill.

Clint Benjamin was a complete waste when Lindsay Thomas,Josh Hill,Tyson Goldsack,Justin Westhoff and Daniel Connors was still there.

Joe Anderson was our next pick and no one else after him has done much except Justin Westhoff and David Rodan but i rather Anderson then Rodan.

The Last draft 2007,very early to call yet,no brainer in Matthew Kreuzer,Trent Cotchin,Rhys Palmer,Cyril Rioli will all star but Kreuser was our man if not Cotchin.

Steven Browne our next pick, looks like a great pick only Christopher Mayne came after him that could have been taken.

Dennis Armfield our next,no one really after him yet,Cale Hooker,Mitchell Farmer and Bradd Dalziell could have been taken.

Im with you Rambo...I say dump Hughes and let's find us a recruiter with perfect 20:20 hindsight...wait a minute, I've had an idea. What are you up to at the minute??? We could really use a guy with your incredible ability to predict the past.

2004 wasn't great but it was a poor draft and the good ones taken after the first 5 were a lottery really. Many others passed on the better players, not just us.

But he seems to have done OK since then.

Yarran has X Factor but also Risk factor in my view, so will be interesting to see if the club got that one right in the long term. Hope they were stringent in their interviews and assessments of his personality.

coaches are on a hiding to nothing these days

they get the team winning games and they are no good as they cost us draft picks, if they lose games and they are just a crap coach.

our issues were not hughes recruiting or even the coaching so much, our issues stemmed from having a leadership group that did not want to do the hard yards and a leadership group that set the poorest of examples to a young list.

stevens- how many pre seasons has he turned up unfit
kouta- admitted in his book he used to sit around with other players complaing ing about the coach
whitnall- see stevens
campo- things got tough around the club and he jumped ship

.....deja vu..........

can Rambo please post his thoughts on the current lot of recruits and we revisit it in a couple of years.

I already note he doesn't think Watts will be a star, and that Kreuzer has done more in the ruck than Warnock.

Any other pearls we can look back on?

Yarran?
Robinson?
Armfield?
Browne?
Hamspon?

Maybe our next recruiting manager could be a clairvoyant.

The only sane and logical explanation about the OP is that he has a very dry and sophisticated sense of humour ;)

Oh come on Gilly, you can produce a much better rant than that.

Would you kindly put some thought into the next one.

Bloody accountants, you have to spell everything out :p.

In order to accept my hypothesis, you have to discount the alternate hypothesis :thumbsu::)

You guys are a tough crowd. I will really have to put some thought into starting my first thread.... At least Rambo has done some leg work for us, pointing out what up and comers were taken by other clubs after our picks in various drafts so we can at least see if any patterns of poor or more likely, inspired list management arise from it.
For mine, I cant fault the current list management, I am on record on other threads for having a fair bash at some of the dud recycled players we got in the early to mid decade and I am in no way against players that have played at other clubs, our 95 premier team was built on them, but we were recruiting real hacks for a while there 5 years or so back.

Anyway back to this thread. I really cant see too many (if any) instances of Diamonds overlooked for glass. There were certainly quality players we overlooked to take Murph, Gibbs and Krueze but no one will argue with their selection, too early to tell if Josh was over rated but he certainly came in handy in landing Judd. After first round in any draft is a bit of a lottery, and finally why oh why would we want Rahn Hooper at our club?

Have you actually watched Rodan the last 2 years...comments like this make me wonder if there is any objectivity at all when comparing our players to opposition players by most on this board.

Rodan is a super player...if Joey turns out anywhere near as good we can count ourselves very lucky.

I think people don't get this post,i'm just comparing players who we could have got.2004 was a disaster for nearly all the clubs but since then we done rather good at the picks we got.

I say we screwed up with Kennedy that's about all at this moment plus in my opinion,no offence,Warnock,he seems to be getting unbelievable money for not a proven player yet. I know they say he has all this talent and the club needs a Main Ruckman but if it don't come through we will lose players + him.

Chris Judd is proven and we know he still has more,so the money he is offered is o.k to have him.

A guy like Richard Hadley i can tell his got the goods and has shown it,but injured,he would be getting a reasonable pay something i would think Warnock should be on.

I just don't like our club throwing money around and getting into trouble. It will hit us just like when senior players like Hamill and co demanded a bit of a increase before who were proven and then they took off when they didn't get it.

I don't want us to lose a guy like Paul Bower,Stephen Browne or a player whos stepping up and has busted his guts but the money aint there. The players are loyal to a point until they feel unappreciated.

I see someone like Bret Thornton who busted his guts in defence who kind of felt unappreciated when his contract came. It was like he wanted out to Hawthorn because someone who just come in was getting nearly the same for doing less and other guys he plays with a hell lot more.

Thats fine, this is your argument , but nowhere in your first post have you raised the issue of player payments! so what is your stance , our recruiting department , or is your problem how much we are playing our players , because as far as i know , nobody has any idea how much any player receives.
