We do need to fix this now....

My point - Bowden called for Tempo in the 3RD QUARTER!!. Nobody paid any attention to him.(Thank God).

Ya wrong buddy.

MY POINT - the whole team took notice, realised that Bowden was saying getting a grip back, think about what was going on and fix the issue and get back to the game plan and they did. Flowing football ensued thanks to Bowdens call.

If you believe that something different happened, tell me what it actually was and why Jack and the other guy called the team to bunch as soon as they saw Bowdens call and how it didn't result in the team getting back on track. Give me some facts about the actions that happened that clearly show that Bowden was ignored. The fact that the player had some room to run in and was able to get clear was because they retructured and made the room and the blocks that allowed it to happen because Bowden made the call.

Sorry Delib but - Ya wrong buddy.

idiotic

Bowden is doing what he is told

U failed to mention how hard he chased several times yesterday
He was pretty good yet again yesterday

some Richmond fans want to be unhappy

No-one told Bowden to try to hold up play yesterday.
And you failed to mention that Bowden realises that if he doesn't chase AGAIN THIS YEAR he will be eventually delisted.

Everything Bowden does from now on, is to save his career. He's already had his last warning by being dropped earlier this year.

That BS lasted as long as Bowden had the ball. In the past they chipped it around for many, many minutes. Listen, I don't have the replay, but soon after the ball moved quickly away thanks to one player carrying up the wing. Not turning back and honouring Bowden's call for hanging on to it without risk.
You're trying to give Bowden credit for something that didn't happen. We didn't go into our shell by retaining the ball at all costs. We ran and carried again and kicked it into the forward line freely.

Gee, you're like a dog with a putrid bone. Too stubborn to let go when something is on the nose.

Bowden in the past has got players in his vicinity to close up shop and stop Richmond's free flowing game. He didn't manage to do it on this occasion.
You may want to give Bowden a Purple Heart for Bravery or whatever, but Bowden's not worth holding on to.
Wallace offered him a place OUT of the backline this year because of the stranglehold, backward style of play he enforces on the backline.
Wallace knew Bowden was and is yesterday's man in the Backline.
Wallace didn't want Thursty and McGuane playing that sort of crap.
No Thursty this week. Bowden slips back.

Let it go WATIGE. Bowden is getting credit from you for something he didn't construct. Ignoring him helped us to continue playing flowing MATCH WINNING football.

Enough

Pot ... Kettle.

Delib I'm not trying to argue that things that Bowden did in the past were right or didn't need changing (nor am I arguing that they were wrong and did!).

I'm just trying to argue that on this one occasion, that you are giving him a severe basting over, he wasn't ignored and got it right and helped the team get back on track in one small part of the game.

It would be real nice if you could for once acknowledge that others have seen something on the day that you didn't and that just maybe you've got this one call wrong.

Look, in the past, and yes at many Melbourne games, when Richmond has been attacking through the field towards the goal and trying to score, the ball all of a sudden has come back via the opposition to the backline. Joel has slowed things down chipped sideways to a player in no better position, and then demanded it back. All momentum from a quick kick-out has died because Joel wants to possess it, before you know it Joel has roped Newy & whoever else is around to playing that negative type of football. I have seen Joel instigate this type of football at the 'G' and Telstra more times than I'd like to think. It slows the whole team down. It spreads through the whole team and the whole team gets jittery and unsure of their possession and what they are supposed to do next. It breeds uncertainty. Even before this game, I've posted about Bowden's controlling influence on the game and how it hinders our better, flowing football.

Grab the replay.....minutes before the end of the 3rd Qtr, Joel pulls the old 'hang on to the ball at all costs signal'. It's chipped around once or twice, and bang someone decides to revert back to run, carry, take risks again.

Usually in the past Joel's call would have had us playing a good 4-5mins of 'nothingness' football. And sometimes we never again got out of that rut for the rest of the game.

This time his 'hold on to the ball at all costs' DIDN'T LAST & DIDN'T WORK.

My initial point was thank god it never lasted.
It never lead us to play freer football. There is no credit that should go to Bowden for our flowing game style on the day. He would have had us play otherwise. Wallace knows his style hurts us.
We were going along beautifully before Joel tried to pull his now 'badly timed' trick out of the bag. And we continued to do that when the group realized the only form for success was continuing to attack.

I won't reply again. Have the last word. I'm even bored of repeating myself to someone who'd see progress and goodness in flaws that need to be fixed, not twisted and turned into praise. Bizarre.

Tempo football is simply about changing the flow of the game. Passing it around the ring like in a basketball game. Teams will generally still take an opportunity if there is a chance to break the lines.

I hate it when other teams do it and I am nervous when we try, being poor at it has cost us in a few games this year ...

That said, when Bowden is the instigator and directing the flow I feel a little more at ease because of his experience and leadership, I believe the players too would feel a little more at ease with him directing.

It is part of the game we have to live with and if we don't do it well we pay for it.

Very magnanimous of you to let me have the last word!

Shame you had to sink to personal insult many times during the "discussion".

Many times over the years at the "G" and other locations I have witnessed Joel do exactly what you are critising him for here and have cursed and sworn at him with the rest of the crowd.

On this occasion though he was not calling for "tempo" as such but more for the team to group and regroup and get it going which is what happened. I started my much practised curse at him only to hold it back and congratulate him and the team for overcoming a poor spot in the game.

I understand that under no circumstances will you concede that this is what happened, but just hope that some others will look at incidents in this and other games and allow that maybe they aren't seeing the whole story and appreciate what those who have seen it from a different angle are telling them.
