We have been exposed..........
& by this I mean for lack of KPP options down back beyond our No.1 (Thornton) & No.2 (Livvo) defenders.
And lets be honest, our No. 2 isnt proven, but towards the end of last year & in the Wiz Cup this year, Livo finally was negating his player, even winning the contests, but this year was & still is crucial to him & also that of the club.
Thorntons worth is not in question at all.
(Considering the patience & investment the club has put into Livvo, lets hope like hell he develops into a servicable backman -at least of the same value that a Presti or Wakelin(s) provide to the Pies / Port).
Assuming a worse case scenario, Livvo comes back, struggles or suddenly becomes the player of 02 & 03 again, what options do we have ?
The current ones are terrible.
We fill holes with Lance and Digby, but this is barely a stop gap & as we can see it is killing us as we need these guys up forward.
Teague has been courageous as ever, but is not a CHB or FB.
The problem beyond this is I struggle to see anyone on our list other than Thornton & Livvo capable of being groomed for the CHF & FB positions.
Setanta has been successful in forward roles, Hartlett (who has been mentioned as handy in Defence) basically plays and has had great success as a CHF / Forward line player.
Norman is probably the only one person currently on the list that appears to be groomed for a KPP backline position.
This year & next will decide the outcome of that.
It will be intersting to see Hartlett in action & where Dennis will play him once he returns from injury.
The poor start to the season I believe is a result of our lack of depth to cover the injuries we have had to our spine down back.
We possibly would have won 2 or perhaps 3 (of the games we lost) if we had these guys up & running.
To be fair to other sides & the ones we have played, they have had their injury concerns as well.
Its just that down back we are not equipped at all to deal with it.
I hope next year we concentrate on drafting a KPP backman within the first 2 rounds as a priority, or alternatively look for a trade (player for player - dont give up a most likely top 10 pick we will have).
I hope some supporters who attend Bullant games will be able to tell me of the next great FB or CHB on our rookie list, because looking at our senior list it is our biggest gaping hole.
