We've got three options we have Pattison,Cartledge and Angus Graham out of these backup ruckman the best would be Cartledge but I think we should keep Pattison in the side

The oldest of whom is 23! Add Putt, and we've got 4 kids ( by ruck standards )...

It's no coincidence that your 'best' ruckman is also the oldest of the lot. Consider also that this same guy got dumped by Essendon when they lost patience with him....All kids take time, but ruckmen more than most.

so our ruck stocks consist of a 31 yo undersized outside type ruckman. will he be there in 2011?

cartledge who has already done the rounds at one club and failed big time.taking cartledge was a desperation move. anyway dud.

graham who comes from the rookie list with some very chronic deficiencies in his game who knows if he will make it or not, my moneys on not atm.

young putt who will take another two yrs to even play a senior game. he looks a likely type.
at least putt was taken in the nd, the first ruckman we have taken in the nd since ottens in 1997. and is not someone elses garbage.

as usual with our development and drafting its all hope and pray stuff. we are certainly putting our eggs in to few baskets. a likely worst case scenario is only putt will be around come 2011.will the club even consider a worst case scenario absolutely not. not if their past record is anything to go by.

not sure that it is a very firm basis for argument ove recruiting ruckman, How many of todays top ruckman were recruited in 1st R of draft, aside from Ottens. I could name more that have been upgraded from rookie list, refer to Cox, sandilands and Charman to start with. Rucks are long term investments where patience is needed and a fair amount of foresight when viewing a 17yo prospect. To suggest the answer is simply sacrifice our 1st R pix year on year for the biggest fish in the pool is simple minded at best, at worst a recipe for disaster:eek:

Agree Bojangles , David Hille a good example at the mo is one of the best rucks in the comp.
no 40 in 1999 Draft
born in 81 so now 27
debut 2001
has only been playing 7 years senior football
has played 138 games.

so he was 20 when he played his first game, it's taken him until the last couple of years to get reallly consistent, as all coaches say big blokes generally take longer than others to develop.
plenty of time for Gus graham and Cartledge to improve and make senior side
both are only 21 and 22 respectivley, surely with Polly out for the season they will elevate cartledge off the rookie list.
they have both been playing pretty well for coburg.

The draft is a matter of 'best' guess.

With ruckmen, who take longer to develop it's a wilder guess than anywhere else.

With that in mind, I just don't think it's worth taking a ruck in the first round or two.

I'd certainly support the idea of taking a ruckman on the rookie list every year though...Give them 2/3 years and make the decision to promote or dump then.

From a list management perspective, I think 3 on the senior list and 2 or 3 on the rookie list is a good way to be.

I think we would have taken Renouf with our 2nd rounder in 2006 and Kruezer last year with our 1st rounder, so claws although the record is bad, it is not like they have a policy of not drafting rucks. What is the big problem is that we never gave ourselves much of a chance by not maximising our picks in the draft.
