I believe that yesterday has further proven the need for some real leaders at Carlton. By this I mean a core group of players who keep self belief no matter what pressure is placed upon them.

I am not talking so much about Kouta or even Lance. I think both of these guys have a dip. It is more guys like Campo and Stevens. They may get 30 plus in stats each but they are too up and down with their application. They are both highly gifted but too often play like superior people.

At times they drop their heads, exibit lazy disposal and expend too much energy in complaining about taggers and umpires. They have and can be great players for the club but lack much discipline in my opinion. This lack of discipline is very damaging in a young team and can set the scene for the sort of performances we saw yesterday.

In wizard cup the whole team really played class footy. However we need a core group to play to their full potential at all times. Good sides have at least 6 class players who play committed footy every week.

Lets promote a culture where players are encouraged to focus more on being real and less on stats and status.

I agree with most of what you have said

However, I believe Stevo and Campo are usually the ones pumping the side up at a huddle or something like that. Kouta also.

I think Lance needs to take some more responsibility as a leader, I have looked at him since the wiz cup and he seems to have slacked off, put on more weight etc.

Fevola, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for him for the rest of the season beginning this Friday. He needs to step on the training park and start leading, he has the chance to do so now and he needs to grab it by the scruff of the neck. He has the chance to prove himself as a leader, a great player and an influential player on and off the ground as a leader.

Teague, French, Thornton are all leaders as well and they show that on the ground.

We have reached an all-time low. Never again will I get excited about an AFL season until at least 6 games in.
Houlihan - Lacks aggression and doesn't fight hard enough to win the ball.... great skills usually, however you'd be forgiven for thinking he was wearing a Richmond jumper on the weekend.
Scotland - Not a defenders Cakehole. Gets plently of it in midfield but kicks around corners too often.
Campo - Should be playing on a wing. Not an in-and-under type like he tries to be sometimes. He is the equivalent of Wayne Campbell at Richmond... we'll never go anywhere while he's a leader at the club.
Whitnall - Has to play in the goalsquare only and contest one-out. Too slow, an ordinary kick... needs to use his bulk to advantage.
Wiggins - Not up to it
Johnson - Ditto
Chambers - Ditto

Something to hang our hats on is the form of Thornton, Waite and Teague... at least these blokes are having a dip week in week out. If we had a dozen of these types we would have these embarrassing floggings.

The last game he played was his first fully fit game he's played all year and he had 16 posessions. So how do you figure that he's 'not up to it'? Is it because we traded to get him? If that's so does that mean that Teague isn't 'up to it' either? Foolishness.

Who said anything about trading to get him????

Chambers is a spud and will never do any good at any club. Looks like he belongs in the army... will be hanging his hat on the fact that he kicked a few super goals in the Wiz Cup for the rest of his career.

How do you know that? Has Callum Chambers come up to you and said "You know Snoozer those super goals I kicked in the wizzer were pretty damn good. I think I'll just sit back and live off those for a while"?

He only just got back fully fit for one game before he got injured again and during that game he had 16 posessions, and helped win it for us. And now you want to sack him because the team had a bad game when he wasn't even on the field? Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

IMO we lack tough, strong, agressive bodies all over the ground. we are a very young side with lots of players still not fully developed.

in the next draft / trade period we need to look to get some older/stronger bodies on the list.

How about we just get some talented kids who can actually hit a target instead?

I agree I'm getting a bit sick and tired hearing this crap we are a young side. Who are our young players? Walker and Betts. That's it. The rest i don't classify as young. Inexperienced maybe. Good enough probably not.

The team had a bad game, yes... but if you read the earlier posts I did say that it was nothing to do with the bitter pills from the weekend.

He may be fit, a good kick, fast... I think 97% of players in the comp fit this category fairly well. Chambers is 26.... and a decent seconds player at best, I doubt that this is the type of player to take Carlton forward. A waste of time picking him up.

with today's draft/trade system you need to take a chance on players like that.

brad pearce was taken from a nothing player at brisbane to a premiership players and quite a decent player for us.
recycled players- there are going to be some real disappointments and then there are going to be some gems we pick up.
its just the way it is.
lets give the bloke a chance to show what he has got.

WTF? I am happy to be corrected but didnt Brad come from StKilda?

We should build our leadership group around Thornton, Waite and Teague. Those three are constantly in our top 5 or there-abouts each week. By doing this, we will have good representatives for our future and will show the public that we've been through the transition. At the momment it still looks like the John Elliot era. Campo, Lappin, Whitnall and Prenda (for starters) should be taken out of the leadership group. They've been lazy IMO and it sets a terrible example.

This is how I see it: Kouta should step down as Captain. He's playing great footy, but his presence sadly isn't the match of Voss and Hird. Those two players, when the game is in the balance or they're on the back foot, they lead from the front. Kouta however, seems to do his job at the same pace no matter the stage of the game.

Stevens may've been a bit unaccountable on Saturday, but he tried desperately to lift the side. As time goes on, it's likely he'll try more an more to impose himself on a match. IMO, I think he's ready for the captaincy.

In 2007:

Captain- Nick Stevens
Vice Captain- Bret Thornton
D-Vice Captain- Jarrad Waite

I think Lappin should be in our leadership, he has not been lazy, infact far from it. Kouta is a good enough captain, but by 2007 I would expect Stevo or someone of the likes to lead as Kouta will have retired.

I'm sick of a lot of people saying Kouta is not the standard of Hird and Voss, ofcourse his not, who the hell is? Not many.
