I couldn't watch or listen to the game and had to be content with internet updates...

I ask - What went wrong?!

How could we have let a team like the Weagles beat us by 92 pts?!.. The goals were coming in from no-where and from no-one!!... Injuries?.. Bah!..

Thanks for the win. ;) However, watching the game, the Saints seem to be chasing jumpers all day and playing with no compassion. Once again, Gehrig promised much but did not deliver. Your team has many of its best players, if not its greatest players ever, out on injury. If some of these players did play, I think the score would have been a lot closer. I always liked the saints as a team and do own their 66 GF win on video. As much as we WCE supporters are meant to hate the "Vics", I hold none towards the Saints. I wish the team well, hope they get a coach will will be there for the players and be allowed to develop the side instead of having results on the boards in his first few games. I hope the players do stick together and grow towards a power in the AFL. I like to see the Saints win a GF in the next few years (as long as it aint against the WCE)

What Happened? You were beaten by a better team on the day. Yes, you have some of your stars out, but we don't have our best 22 out either, but you definately miss Burke, Loewe and Harvey. Unlucky, I enjoyed it thoroughly, but hope your team can get back on track, and soon.

No midfield or forward line is the answer.

No skills is the other.

Luckily I had band rehearsals to vent my frustrations out. Drums are good to hit when you're pissed.

vaul, the easier question to answer would be. what went right?
answer: nothing

the short answer to your original question is everthing that could go wrong did. as we didn't see the game (good riddance ch7) it's hard to speculate what went wrong on the field, but if i was to hazard a guess it would be that we were beaten to the ball, lacked the necessary desire at a contest, created a multitude of skill errors and had a lot of blokes who simply refuse to lift their work rate with running and 2nd efforts. all the usual stuff.

oh and the eagles played better football.

I was at the game yesterday and there were a few worrying signs for the saints. Like Goldenblue said earlier, I quite like the Saints, when I went to Melbourne when I was 8 I stayed in St Kilda and don't have anything against them. We've both had shocking seasons, and the following comments are just based on what I saw:

St Kilda looked like they weren't playing for anything, for their fans, their club, their team-mates. I don't know if Ken Judge revved the boys up, but we did look focussed on the job and played as a team, the encouragement and spirit was definately there!

I wish I could say the same about 2 of St Kilda's "stars" in Fraser Gherig and Peter Everitt. Gherig was slaughtered by Trent Carroll who made more of an effort to the contest, and Everitt looked lost against Gardiner. Everitt's body language was really alarming to me, he didn't want to be out there and played like it. If he wants to leave the club, let him go and try and get some good players out of the deal.

There are some good signs to look to the future, Wulf and Milne showed quite a bit and they never gave up. Riewold and Koschitzke (sp?) will be gun players in 2-3 years time, both got cleaned up by Wilson, but thats all part of the learning curve I guess.

Both players mentioned have played consistently GOOD football all season, so I actually take exception to your patronising, "stars" comment.

Seems you love giving it to Fraser Gehrig, but unfortunately the man's been a rock all year. One of the few players I can pat on the back at the end of the year.

Yeah alot of that is good so say but the fact remains (without watching the game) that St Kilda went into the F50m 50 times to the Weagles 54... ?!.. Is there something strangely wrong about that fact and the scoreline?!..

Well that 54 to 50 forward 50 stat is a little weird as the Eagles absolutely DOMINATED through the midfield. Cousins, Fletcher, Jones, Taylor, Kerr and even Wooden towelled up there opponents. Although a passage of play that happened often was Saints kick it forward and the Eagles hurriedly kick it back out Saints gather it and hurriedly kick it forward, the Eagles in turn hurriedly kick it out. Happened on many occasions.

Whereas the Eagles would go forward and find a target or they would just run past 50 and slot one through. I dont recall seeing all game a Saint running into there forward 50 to have a shot on goal.
