So after all that no one bid on him ..

Is he not as good as we been led to believe ?

Confused
Recruiters just hadnt seen a lot of him this year, given he only played 3 coates league games, given he played school footy and battled some injuries this year. It was hard to get a read of him thats all.
But he has a lot of upside

Between Buller, West and McCarthy, we've got some real competition for that third forward spot next year and then (more likely) into the future. I assume Buller has it by default to start off with but who knows how things evolve over the next couple of years. We're pretty stacked with young talls now, if you include Howes, Steene and Smit. Good call to go with mids for the other picks.

Third spot? More like 2nd spot since Membrey is your traditional 3rd forward. Big shoes to fill.

Our tall forwards is going to be a big watch. Will need to McStay to kick 40+ for us to be a good team next year,

Basically recruiting is a numbers game. You pick up to six key forwards and if you’re lucky two work out and the remaining four you let go. McCarthy has time on his side. Buller doesn’t - he needs to be pressing McStay for spot in the forward line next year, but he’s lucky that Mihocek is no longer there. McStay needs to return to his former form before his ACL. West got a game last year so he’s in the mix as well. We’re lucky we now have recruiters who value key forwards. Under the regime of Derek Hine and before that, Jenkins we put all our eggs in one basket. We would go get a forward on the fringes, such as Jesse White and Krueger and expect them to be the answer. There was no fall back position. We recruited mainly mids and half backs on the expectation that a few of them would work, but we never approached the recruitment of a key forward in the same way. Now we do.

Prefer we go the Richmond 2017 model with one tall and a flotilla of small and medium forwards

Confused
After P36 there's effectively very little benefit in another club bidding if they know that the aligned club will match. This is due to the cost of matching the bid zeroing out, that is, it costs zero points for the aligned club to match the pick. The only cost for the aligned club to match is the loss of a primary list pick/spot.

The impact of a bid once the aligned club has filled all list spots is different, at that point, the aligned club is unable to match a bid as they don't have the available list spots - effectively, the only way that the aligned club can acquire the draftee is to wait until the end of the draft and pre-select the draftee as a pre-listed Cat A or Cat B (if the club has spots available). This happened last year to the Saints, The Cats bid on one of their academy draftees and they were unable to match as they didn't have any Primary List spots available.

In the McCarthy scenario, we had enough spots on our list to allow us to match and so after P36 and all the way through until we decided to bid on Zac, any bid on McCarthy would have been either highly speculative, e.g., we changed our mind on drafting him, or a time wasting exercise.

Where bid matching after P36 can be effective is in the scenario where a club has multiple aligned players and only one pick, a bid at that point forces the aligned club to make a decision on which aligned draftee they most prefer at the risk of losing the other aligned draftee e.g., after we picked Zac, if another club picked Tom McGuane, then we'd need to make a decision whether we wanted to keep our last pick for Jai, or use it on Tom.
