What do we do with Chris Tarrant?

Because we don't have enough run coming out of the backline with that back six, that's why.

There needs to be a Shaw down there for that reason, at least. And probably another to provide run (i.e. Clarke or Johnson or Yagmoor).

The days of running it out of defence are long gone. You very rarely see a side carry the ball through the forward pressure and press of the opposition and it's more about getting numbers at the drop of the ball further up the ground. Thats where the the wingers, rovers and half back flankers come into play.

Geelong showed why it can work last year. Their three tall backmen took a heap of marks from opposition kicks and then booted it long to their key forwards. They then had numbers at ground level and turned the pressure back on the opposition. All three should play together, with the odd one going forward and a heap of rotations through the back 6.

I think Tarrant will still be based in the backline but will still have stints forward, and more than in 2011. The good thing about Tarrant is that he's so flexible, not just with where he can play, but who he can play on in defense. I also think it's unlikely Nathan Brown will play a full season, and I'm guessing both Reid and Tarrant will be rested as well, emaning all 3 can play most of their games as defenders, but perhaps with 1 of them not playing at all. In saying that I think Reid & Tarrant are flexible enough that all 3 can play together.

A few points.

1. Why are so many locked into the back 6 as it used to be? For a long time the pies have played with differing numbers behind the ball. Bucks could prefer to play with an extra man behind the ball.

2. Taz himself is a very versatile defender, can play on guys like Milne, LeCras if need be. He is also decent with the ball in his hands...ie he could comfortably play as a medium defender if need be.

3. Reid is one of best rebounding players, he is basically an extra attacking HB.

We could comfortably play Taz, Brown and Reid in the one team...with Harry, H.shaw and Reid providing rebound and drive from the back.
