Because we don't have enough run coming out of the backline with that back six, that's why.
There needs to be a Shaw down there for that reason, at least. And probably another to provide run (i.e. Clarke or Johnson or Yagmoor).
The days of running it out of defence are long gone. You very rarely see a side carry the ball through the forward pressure and press of the opposition and it's more about getting numbers at the drop of the ball further up the ground. Thats where the the wingers, rovers and half back flankers come into play.
Geelong showed why it can work last year. Their three tall backmen took a heap of marks from opposition kicks and then booted it long to their key forwards. They then had numbers at ground level and turned the pressure back on the opposition. All three should play together, with the odd one going forward and a heap of rotations through the back 6.
