The old 'i have a degree but work in retail' syndrome

Your parents will need you to support them one day, and they don't want to end up supporting your future kids.

Any company you start at the bottom, my advice is utilise your education now and stop wasting time on an 'easy' job.

Remember a job and a career are two different animals.

a lot of people where i used to work had degrees

they just either missed the boat with grad jobs or wanted to progress their careers in retail

I can't relate to this at all. My mum never pushed for me to succeed in anything really. Not strict at all etc. I've had the 'freedom' other people talk about getting when they move out pretty much since primary school.

Sounds like you need to move out of home in a hurry.

Thing is i am already moved and am independant.

Yes this is exactly what i think they are thinking of. I have been telling them that i will move onto something greater when i know i can no longer develop at my current job anymore. There are still many things to do at Myer, i want to pump up the sales of my department to a respectable level. If i cannot get into head office then i will move on. But they don't wanna listen.

It's great you're so ambitious.

Who cares what your parents say, man?

Follow those dreams!

Why do you want to follow a career path at Myer that you could have pursued without a degree? Any 'head office' job you eventually get after investing a ton of time and effort will just be the equivalent of a grad position anyway (or not much higher).

The reality is that while you have aspirations, your current career path isn't really adding much value to your resume. As soon as you move into the corporate world (either at Myer or somewhere else) your retail experience will not matter very much.

You sound like you're probably a good salesman and retail manager, which I'm sure makes it harder to chuck in the job. But the whole purpose of a degree is essentially to help you get your foot in the door of the corporate world - working your way up from retail is how you get your foot in the door if you don't have that advantage. It's hard, it takes longer, and there's much less chance of success.

Your parents are upset because you're squandering your opportunities. Unlike many people in the world, you were fortunate enough to have the money and the marks to get a tertiary education. Make use of it.

You're a top poster Caesar, but I hate this attitude in society sometimes. Probably not so much in this particular instance as RR seems to have genuine plans for going up in the corporate world and your advice has some merit in that case. But outside of that, anyone who believes you should do something you don't necessarily want to do because you have 'talent' for it or the opportunity to or that you have some responsibility to make the most of it, can get right on ****ed. :thumbsu:
Follow whatever path makes you happy.

I guess that's a fair call. I mean, the ultimate goal of anyone in life has to be happiness. If you're not happy then everything else is a waste of time.

It just really shits me when people waste opportunities others would kill to have. Maybe that's not fair on an individual level; I just know quite a few people who would have killed to go to uni if they'd got the marks.
