Marty McFly has done himself a mischief and has altered the course of Aussie footy in ways you can't imagine!
Get ready to dive into alternate futures!

What is “What If” Wednesdays?
"What if" Wednesdays was a competition comprised of real-life football team proposals, merger propositions, former teams and a few hypotheticals brought to life by the FJGD community (eg. If the Melbourne-Hawthorn merger went ahead, if University/Fitzroy/Bris Bears stuck around, if Gold Coasts nickname were the Lifesavers etc.) it became this boards longest running competition (8/9/14 – 29/5/19). It has been revived under a meme cultured spin-off! Time traveller sneezes memes are all about butterfly effects on various things caused by a time traveller altering the past by means of a simple sneeze.

What’s new this time around?
This time or these times around, we will be flung into various timelines where our universes former teams, mergers, relocation proposals never existed or had its outcome altered slightly or severely! The list below is comprised of alternate timelines and the butterfly effect caused by our cheeky time traveller. Your job is to envision this outcome! Each comp will run for 1 week and the poll will run for 3 days. The winner picks the next team from the list below or can use their one-time self-imposed idea where they put forward an idea not listed below.

There are some routes you can go by if you're stuck:
  • The chosen team has entered their designated competition in the current year (unless specified) along with the current teams OR
  • You may design kits at any point in time unless strictly specified OR
  • Accompany your kits with a backstory on how the team came to be to help better envision the outcome
  • Use Google to search the history and stories behind what is being altered
Bare minimum for an entry is:
  • A home kit with the front of the jumper showing
    (Back, shorts, socks are optional)
  • OPTIONAL Away kit (Home with white shorts is acceptable)
  • OPTIONAL 3rd kit
    • Clash kit
    • Heritage kit
    • Other kit
  • OPTIONAL Club Logo (Highly Encouraged!)

Let’s see what has happened this time
What-If-TTSE-Title-Week-9.png
Our Timeline: West Coast Eagles enter the VFL wearing Blue and Yellow
Altered Timeline: Much earlier, Williamstown Seagulls entered the VFL wearing their standard Blue with Yellow sash jumpers. Due to West Coast planning to wear the same colours as Williamstown, the VFL stepped in and WC had their kits altered to further differentiate from Williamstown's

Basic Rules (Read Carefully):
  1. Kits and Logo must be in 1 picture (Makes polls easier to fit everything in)
  2. The kits can consist of just a Jumper (Shorts and socks are encouraged to give a full identity effect)
  3. Minimum 1 kit and there's no limit to how many kits you can include after that
eg. Home and Away and/or Clash and/or Heritage and/or Others
    1. Designing a Home and away/clash kit is highly encouraged for that authentic feel and to develop that alternate universe experience
  4. Attempt to stay close to the altered timeline
  5. Directly copying current football team kits/logos are not allowed
  6. Creating a logo is encouraged but you may take inspiration from and/or alter any existing sports logo to drive home your design.
  7. Maximum 2 entries per person
  8. Any questions at all, please ask!
Specific Category Rules:

Colour Corner Rule:

  1. You must stick to the colours/alterations mentioned (eg. for Port Adelaide, you must include Magenta in any way you like, for Adelaide’s hurried kits a minimum of 3 of the 5 colours must be used)

West Coast Eagles (Tangerine and White).png
"Well Marty really did it this time. In this universe upon his move from Celtic FC "Liverpool" was accidentally written as "Blackpool" on the transfer sheet of one Kenny Dalglish. Blackpool FC, known as "the Tangerines" are now the biggest club in England, having won six First Division titles in ten years. Because of their success and international appeal the colours of tangerine and white are chosen for the newly established "West Coast Eagles".

This should be GWS’s clash strip.

It was the year 1986 and a new side the West Coast Eagles planned to enter the AFL with a Blue and Yellow color scheme but in this universe, AFL powerhouse Williamstown pushed the AFL to force the Eagles into changing their planned color scheme, the color green was suggested, matching closer to the Philly eagles or the Minnesota north stars, the initial yellow was kept but after research the blue was swapped for a shade of green called victory green, in these colours the eagles would win premierships in 1992, 1994, 2006 and 2018

A question here, would one be allowed to enter a yellow and black design under the assumption that Williamstown are in the league and Richmond aren’t?
I probably should've included the backstory, This idea came from a string of domino effects in the list development thread

What if Port Melbourne and Williamstown were invited to the VFL instead of Carlton and St.Kilda? How would that changed the course of history?

1908 - University and Carlton join VFL.

1925 - Richmond, Footscray and Hawthorn(?) join VFL

1987 - West Coast colours?

And would North Melbourne dominate the VFA? And St.Kilda, would they be more successful in the VFA?

How long would Port Melbourne be the Boroughs before the name being outdated in the VFL/AFL comp?

In this case, Richmond and Williamstown are both in the VFL prior to WC joining. However, I'd argue that since the Bears entered the same year wearing Hawthorns colours, I'll allow a Black and Yellow jumper too :thumbsu:
Begs the question, why didn't the VFL step in to change the Bears jumpers to differentiate from Hawthorns . Eh, it's an alternate timeline, go nuts!

WIW-TTSE----West-Coast-Eagles-Altered.png

It's 1987 and WA are about to have their state put on the footy map, the West Coast Eagles were founded and had planned to wear a Blue and Yellow jumper to represent the vivid imagery of Western Australia's land, sky and ocean. However, Williamstown who were admitted into the VFL much earlier raised the issue of possible confusion between the two sharing the same colour schemes. The VFL stepped in and informed WC that they'd have to alter their jumper to help better differentiate between the two. With the unveiling day closing in, the WC board made the decision to change the blue to black in reference to the WA state colours.

Like, how was this NOT THE ACTUAL JUMPER?!

Beats me. 🤷‍♂️

Could have been the original Orange Team, what a missed opportunity.

Like, how was this NOT THE ACTUAL JUMPER?!
I think there’s a theory that the two expansion sides from 1987 wore yellow based jumpers because Hawthorn were one of the dominant sides of the era. Now why one of those sides came into the league wearing exactly Hawthorn’s colours I’m not sure, but who knows. I don’t know how much weight there is to the theory, maybe Mero might know.

Hawthorn were blue and gold but had to change on joining VFA because if….Williamstown
