Can't seem to get a reasonable answer to this elsewhere.

What constitutes disposal efficiency? Do you have to hit your bloke on the chest or is kicking to a 50/50 contest deemed to be efficient disposal? Clearly kicking it to the opposition counts against you but otherwise I'm not sure what does and doesn't fall under disposal efficiency.

Posters love quoting disposal efficiency, particularly when it comes to Boyd. Does anyone understand how it is calculated?

If you are referring to Champion Data's definition it is a calculated formulae that looks at the next posession. A kick, handball or knock-on that goes to a team mate who gets a mark (contested or uncontested) hard ball get, loose ball get, gather or a scoring shot (goal and behind). Fairly accurate except you need to factor in the type of player. e.g. back players efficiency is always higher whilst "extractors" are lower.

Thanks. So if the ball is kicked to the advantage of a team mate and they fail to mark it or gain possession, the disposal is rated as inefficient? As an example, how would Barlow's pass to Jones on Friday be rated?

If the recipient was unable to benefit from the disposal, it is deemed ineffective. Boyd's efficiency at one point of the game on Friday night was 46%. Very poor from a key position player. If the recieving player fumbles/drops the mark, doesnt pick up the ball etc, its not an ineffective disposal.

Clear as mud:)

So what this tells me is a player's efficiency may rely heavily on your team mates to make good position. Clearly playing in a poor side has a major effect on your disposal efficiency.

Boyd's efficiency by hand was exemplary on Friday when he had space. His kicking didn't strike me as poor but perhaps his low efficiency was in part due to him having to kick to contests because our forwards could not get a break on their opponent. Is this a reasonable assessment?

Boyd had a good game by Boyd standards. Your point about kicking to contests because our players are not moving is valid to a small degree.

Also valid are the following.
  • Kicks the ball and misses target by 15 meters. Lands into opposition hands as a clear uncontested turn-over.
  • Bombs the ball forward in the hope one of our guys can follow up. Should be a 50/50 chance but the way our forwards move its more like 20% chance we get it.

Dont get me wrong he tries his arse off but he is INEFFECTIVE.

IF you look at the results from the weekend. He is Number 1 in disposals on the AFL site. Of the top 20 on the list for the round he had the lowest disposal efficiency by a large margin. His disposal % was 51.28 The average disposal % for the top 20 is 72.29! Many players cracking 80%.

*Matthew Boyd WB 51.28*
*Gary Ablett GCFC 71.05*
*Sam Mitchell HAW 65.79*
*Sharrod Wellingham COLL 62.16*
*Liam Shiels HAW 54.29*
*Daniel Wells NMFC 87.88*
*Jack Redden BL 78.12*
*Chris Judd CARL 80.65*
*Matthew Rosa WCE 64.52*
*Simon Black BL 60.00*
*Andrew Carrazzo CARL 80.00*
*Kade Simpson CARL 60.00*

We would be a much much better team if Boyd stopped his opponents from disposing effectively. To do this he would need to man up an opponent on his own accord. The opposition show him no respect because they are better off using Boyds inefficiencies to their advantage.

The coaches could change his style of play if they want to. Move Ward to center, Boyd to a more negative role and Cross out of the team....

Also love Cross but his time has come as well. We cant play him in the center and he cant play anyware else. Until we fix our center line we are stuffed. Cooney absence magnifies the problems in the center.
