Who knows??

Its been bugging me for ages and i wish i knew.

From an afl listed perspective how many games do they need to play in the vfl and how many can they play in the afl?

This is how I understand it, unless it has changed recently:

AFL listed players must have played at least 7 VFL games and no more than 12 AFL games.

There is also the 12:10 rule, which states that if your AFL team is out of the finals then you can play a maximum of 12 AFL listed players (not including rookies in Geelong's case).

Geelong and Collingwood have open selection this week with both AFL and VFL teams playing.

Collingwood will have 22 AFL/AFL Rookie listed players and Casey has only 3 Melbourne players who I'm guessing have been told they will be de-listed because all the decent Melbourne players who qualify aren't there.

If Collingwood and Geelong win both AFL and VFL this week then the VFL will play next week and AFL won't. Then I think the different selection rules apply.

But Geelong and Collingwood would be different? or not? because they dont have reserves teams.
The difference with Geelong is that our AFL rookies are counted as VFL players for the 12-10 rule, to make up for the shorter VFL list. I guess Collingwood would be the same.

Officially (according to VFL record)...

VFL teams with AFL allignments can have a maximum 12 AFL players/AFL rookies and minimum 10 VFL listed players.

Geelong and Collingwood have no restrictions whilst their AFL team is still in the finals. But if the VFL team lasts longer than the AFL team then there is no 12/10 rule but players need to have played 7 VFL games to qualify or have been injured for a significant part of the season.
