At the risk of getting chewed out big time, I thought I’d throw out the idea of Dockers seeking quality trades for Aaron Sandilands. While I recognise he’s one of our marquee players & a firm fan favourite, the thought process is:

  • He is nearly 29 – still has some productive years (& therefore market value) but has arguably peaked in his powers;
  • Being an elite quality ruckman he could command 2 quality up & coming players (eg: a key forward + in & under rover);
  • Although Griffin is now seeking to go to Port Adelaide, we have good backup with a Griffin/Clarke combo (as Griffin proved in Sandlilands’ absence) + Moller on the horizon;
  • Perhaps Sandy’s mysterious toe injury is a sign of things to come (he does cover an awful lot of ground for a giant – must catch up with him at some point);
  • Despite his dominance in tap-outs, we normally get smashed in clearances anyway, so to some extent he’s a wasted asset.
For example, a team like Hawthorn might offer a key forward (eg: Roughead) + an up & coming backman/midfielder? Thoughts?

Complete nonsense. If we are going to challenge for a flag in the next couple of years he is our biggest (nice play on words) asset.

Personally I'd make him captain.
It'd be a bit like the Aussie cricket team did with Clarke, gave him the job and demoted our best player (punter)!
Same thing could happen at Freo, Sandi = captain, Pav(our best player) = CHF and learn how to chase!

My recollection from the first half of 2010 is that we were killing it in clearances when we had a good midfield around Sandi. Is this correct?

You won't get 'chewed out' by me SDK. I completely agree and have been saying so for some time.

Sandilands for JOM + pick #7.

Trade our Rhys compo pick for Mitch Clark and play him in the ruck NOT forward.

Griff to Port Adelaide for (hopefully) their second round pick.

In the short-term the only loss is the difference between Sandi and Clark. In the long-term the benefits are enormous.

In the short term the loss is much bigger than the difference between Sandi and Clark. Can't even be bothered arguing against such a ridiculous idea

I like the cut of your jib FreoFan.

Pick 7 off to GCS for homesick Harley Bennell. Pick 16 for a good young KPP like Dobosz or McInnes. 2 second rounders should get us a couple like Jordan Lockyer and Ben Brown. Trade Roberton to Carlton for Bower and were all set.

I can sniff that Premiership already.

Fact or fiction/hearsay/rumour etc?

So umm who will be playing in the ruck? Our only dominant area of the field is in the ruck with Sandi, but I'm sure our average midfield and forward line will get us over the line

As Sandi ages I'd prefer he spends more time at FF rather than in the ruck. No way I'd consider trading him.

Clarke and Clark would rotate between ruck and forward. We never played all three ruckman in the same game during 2011 so this won't be any different. We might need to rookie a mature age ruckman that can take a place if either get injured.

The clark/e's would be one of the best ruck duos in the comp and we would be making the most of Sandi's trade value.

No they wouldn't. They would be middle of the road compared to other ruckman. Neither would come close to Sandis dominance

While we are at it I think we should trade Crowley for Ablett and Swallow

We obviously disagree on the trading of Sandi, and I don't blame you, he's a club champion, but are you suggesting that Sandilands for JOM + pick #7 is asking too much? Seems pretty fair to me.

I have thought about this, a lot.

I'm worried that our "Ruck dominance" is actually a "hit-out dominance" and we shape up pretty average when it comes to hit-outs to advantage.

The media talk about roving to the opposition's ruckman when it's a non-contest, but if that's the case, we shouldn't be smashed in clearances and our ruckman shouldn't be one of our best clearance players. He should barely get a kick. Tap-rove-inside fifty.

Perhaps we don't block enough for our ball winners. We did alright with Griff.

FYI, on the bottom of the Rhys Palmer article, where Harvey was interviewed, he mentions that no Fremantle player has approached the club asking for a trade but there has been contact from managers of other players looking to inquire.

He needs to improve his forward stuff.
He's no Dean Cox sadly!

With Sandi it's not about dominance it's about delivery. Making him lead is plain stupid. Drop a ball on his head and he either marks it or gets a free.

Like I've said before he could be the 21st century version of Big Bob Johnson.

but sandi wins the most clearances for us as well. i understand peoples logic, but firstly, sandi wont want to move, secondly we would be getting rid of a legend, thirdly, there is no garauntee what we get for him will turn out that great anyhow

It was probably the best run we'd had in clearances ever, in fact I'd put good money on it that it was. It's one of those areas I've always paid pretty close attention to.

Basically agree. People have short memories don't they. Look what happened to our already shaky stopage play when he went down this season - it basically fell apart. It picked up a bit in the end there, but he gives us some hope, without him we're bloody hopeless.

PS. Still think we need to work out how to use his dominance better, but certainly in the last few years we've gotten a lot better at it.

What people don't realize is that if Sandi was traded to a Victorian club he would finish his career as the most dominant player to ever play the game.

We certainly don't get the most out of Sandi's output because our midfield is so shit.

I think the Clark(e)s rucking in tandem would be awesome, especially with a genuine gun mid in O'Meara. The combined mobility would be amazing to watch.

But it is the sort of thing Sandilands would have to request I would think if GWS were chasing him.

$6,780,520 would be the size of his 3 year contract as well... so he'd be pretty comfortable in retirement mowing those lawns..
We'd never trade Sandi, but assume this a hypothetical thread so if we got JOM (~2012 pick 3?) and 2011 pick 7, I'd take it in a heart beat.
2013 Clark and Clarke in tandem with Hill, Barlow, Mora, Fyfe, Suban, Mundy, Pitt, JOM and 2011 pick 7....looks pretty good.

Juicy. You can add Moller to the ruck combo as well.
