When was the Essendon FC first established as a club?

And if before 1910 what were they called before the BOMBERS?

1872.

The Same Olds. Might've been something else before 1910 though, I know we were The Same Olds for a while early on. Haven't got my History of Essendon book in front of me, but my knowledge is pretty good.

If before 1910? You really don't know your football history do you?

You should be able to name when each team joined the VFL.

Thanks.
I was wondering how the tag "Bombers" came about as it must have been
around the era of the two world wars and could not have been before the invention of the bomber.

Anyone in Sheedy land have any expertise in this matter?

And I should be able to do this because?

You should be able to tell me the four amino acids which make up DNA and which is replaced by uracil in RNA....hmmm..without a websearch.

No as explained above I wondered about the link with the BOMBER. 1910 seemed a fairly good cutoff point as I beleive the first Bomber was invented during WW1. 1910 was hedging incase it was invented prior to the war....
suitable explaination?

It is mid-week and most of the posts are just loons geeing the supporters of the teams they play next week or asking stupid qustions about whether you would rather have Hird or Buckley or Voss on your team...personally I would like few hot girllies on my team but anyway...it does get a bit dull and I thought I would actually try to educate myself about something I had wondered and "Oh my god" was not about the club I support.....

The name 'Bombers' stuck because of Windy Hill's close proximity to Essendon Airport. From memory the club started playing there in 1922 and the nickname has been used ever since.

Hahahaha I can't believe that thread not only got made again but that it will no doubt reach 8-10 pages for about the 100th time.

Thanks. exactly what I wanted to know.

Gets pretty damn boring doesn't it...must lie awake at night thinking em up.

The one thing you should know is that Essendon, like Collingwood, was one of the 8 founding members of the VFL when it formed in 1897. I would expect any AFL follower to know that much. With regards to Essendon, no I would not expect you to know much more than that.

Here is a little bit of My Essendon history.
Jimmy Hird's dad Allan was my coach at ANU FC for a few years and James used to come down and watch us play when he was a youngster.
My wife cut his hair for many years as they lived in the same suburb and were family friends.

Sad but true.

PS Red+Black

Without looking it up, ACTG. Now as for what they stand for ...

guessing

cytosine
taurine

not sure. and no idea about the RNA bit. I failed Uni Biology.

Amino acids don't make up DNA. Amino acids make proteins.

Nucleotides make up DNA.

For those of you guessing, the NUCLEOTIDES are adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine. Uracil replaces thymine in RNA.

I can tell you this and tell you when VFL clubs joined. (But that's cheating, I'm a biochemist. ;) As such Pie eyed, I must tell you to please make sure you know your biochemistry before challenging others about it. :p)

Nice one Bomber Gal..
Not preaching just making a point..
I am neither a sports journalist or an AFL/VFL historian so I don't see why I should know verbatim the complete and un-abridged history of every club in the competition.
My question in response was simply to illustrate my point.
Sorry I got on your Turf.

My lack of historical and statistical knowledge of the game does not take away any of my enjoyment or passion for it as I am sure your knowledge of biochemistry does not take away from your enjoyment of life..

Good effort though.

I did however get the answer to my question...so thanks for the info and banter...Beats another "who would you have in your team" thread any day.

This didn't take long to go off topic.

I thoroughly recommend this book

Loads of snippets - Neale, Chris, Anthony and Terry Daniher played on the same side in round 22 in 1990.
