Mark Latham has been criticised for failing to issue even a press statement (which could easily have been drafted by his staff and simply sent out under his name) in response to the Tsunami disaster.

This may, or may not, be a fair criticism. As we know Latham is crook and confined to quarters under medical instructions. Fair enough. IMHO he was a bit slow letting anyone (particularly his own parlimentary colleagues) know about it but ultimately there's little he can do about his condition at present and he should not be expected to compromise his recovery.

Chris Evans the ALP Senate Leader has been responding on behalf of the party.

I wonder however about Latham's deputy Jenny Macklin. Is it too much to ask that she interupt her Christmas holidays to at least issue a couple of statements on behalf of the opposition?

I really just can't fathom her non appearance. Surely someone in a leadership position like that could at least make a comment.

I'm happy for someone to point out that she's in the middle of an Andes hiking expedition and uncontactable, but if she's not there's no excuse.

I've long thought she lacks any ounce of leadership, this confirms it.

BAH HA HA!

He looked fine to me: Latham at resort pool
January 11, 2005

The Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, stayed at a luxury resort on the Central Coast last week while Labor leaders insisted he was too ill to make a statement on the tsunami disaster.

Mr Latham, who has been criticised by Labor MPs for not publicly expressing his sympathy for victims, was seen with his family at the pool of the resort for three days from January 2, according to three other guests.

His spokesman said on January 5 that Mr Latham had fallen ill with a repeat bout of pancreatitis about 10 days before and was under "strict orders" from his doctors to rest up.

A guest at Terrigal's Star of the Sea resort, Shirley Corbett, of Sydney, said yesterday that she and five friends saw Mr Latham, his wife, Janine, and two young sons, Oliver and Isaac, over the three days. "He was with the kids at the pool. There was nothing unwell there about him."

She said Mr Latham was "doing his fatherly thing" watching the boys in the paddling pool.

Mrs Corbett's friend, who asked not to be named, said she and the other five people in her group had no doubt that it was Mr Latham, although he was sporting a very short haircut.

Another witness who also asked not to be named said: "It was definitely Mark Latham with his children."

The general manager of Star of the Sea, Bob Lloyd, said he could not say "yes or no" as to whether Mr Latham had stayed at the resort, where multi-bedroom suites cost $800 to $1000 a night.

Mr Latham's spokesman also refused to confirm or deny Mr Latham's whereabouts.

Macklin is a non entity.

Far behind in quality of Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd and others.

I think Macklin was a 'safe choice' by the NSW right who didn't want anyone taking the shine of their boy.

the earlier leadership of Crean was due to the strong presense and showing of the labor party in Victoria, and really iritated the power brokers in NSW.

Crean was a decent chap (not that different to Dr Hewmus) but lacked any personality, Latham has depth and personality but was outpointed when his natural flair was hemmed in by the image makers.

Labour lost a good chance to win when they tried to 'smooth' Latham into a howard clone, when latham was winning off his own bat.

Macklin needs to lift her profile or she's gone, Rudd>macklin, Gillard>macklin, dying swan>macklin.

I totally agree. Surely the Deputy Opp Leader could issue a brief press release on behalf of the ALP. If not, surely somebody from the ALP could? Surely.

Macklin is pathetic. She's so uninspiring. She says nothing to back up her leader, ever. In fact I can't believe she's still deputy. Gillard would be much better candidate, if not for leader.

Who cares. She has a face like a hat full of ar$eholes. If we are going to have afemale p.m. then at least she should be good looking. They are all full of shyte so we may as well have something decent to perv on. :D
