Why Emulation is a Good Thing and Not a Bad Thing

seems like those articles are just saying why they think emulators are 'needed' not whether they're good or bad. the constant references to "preserving" "gaming history", "gaming heritage" almost made me barf, isn't what we have what has made games a better and more wholesome industry than cinema? the fact that old games become relics, available on that medium only, unique, special? i don't think gaming should follow any other industry just because that's how they do things.

a lot of this talk always comes back to pretending nintendo are doing something archaic and evil but they're only protecting what's theirs. i feel like that notion is almost extinct today. so what if "nintendo are just pirating their own roms and selling them back to you omg!!" (i smell the agenda a mile away), it's their content, their games, their IPs to do whatever they want with is it not? if that's how it technically works for them to do that then what's wrong with that? that's how i see it anyway. none of it seems to make sense from a business perspective but they play the "culture" angle and pull on your heartstrings pretty well...

I haven't read the articles. They sound like total garbage.

It's good to see Sega taking some steps to supporting legal emulation. Just last week they revamped the majority of their Sega Megadrive titles on Steam, giving them save-states, various graphical and audio options as well as Steam Workshop support (i.e. Allowing mods and rom hacks to be available to download on Steam).

I have no problem paying licenceholders to play old games, but it's contingent on them actually making the games available.

As long as emulators are the only practical way to access old gaming content, it's unreasonable to expect people not to use them.
