Toast Why we didn't replace Fevola

Here is the Carlton explanation as to why we picked the best available midfielder in the draft, some of the bullshit coming out of some Carlton supporters mouths makes me sick. We will be ok we have quality talls, we have a new recruit in Waite, and from everything I have heard about our #12 he sounds like a genuine gun. I for one am going to support these kids and I have faith they will turn out to be stars. Fact is:

It takes a good recruiter to take the best avaliable.

It takes a GREAT recruiter to take the best available with a view to the club's next premiership.

WH is a good recruiter, but is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a great one.

Oh for gods sake, there's no pleasing some people.

He's not going to say we didn't pick player X because he's shit.

Hughes can only say he picked a player because he stuck by strategy and picked the players rated highest on his list.

I dare say he'd love to let results do the majority of the talking for him. And that's exactly what he should be judged on. Not whether or not he picked a youngster because he's mentioned more on BigFooty than another recruit.

Reaching for players is neglecting his job to select the best possible players for the Carlton Football Club.

I thought it was obvious why Carlton didn't replace Fev. Its just as important that we bolster our Half back - Centre - Half Fwd lines so that we replace the likes of Nick Stevens and, looking ahead in the next couple of years, players like Scotland and Houlihan with quality HB's/mids/fwds now while you can get them. Good luck trying to get anything decent in the draft over the next 2 to 3 years with the GC and West Sydney raiders draft preferences.

Before the draft there was a slight medical query on Talia given some recent hamstring problems that were said to be "tendinitis on the hamstrings".

This is pretty clearly where the problems start. This is not expressing an opinion, or putting an argument forward, it's just insulting the club. If someone listed as an opposition supporter did it, they'd be carded.

But Hughes pointed out the Blues still had eight players of 195cm or taller compared with seven on St Kilda's list.

Can be a huge difference between being tall and a KP player. Ask the Bulldogs. Every man and his dog but Hughes knows we needed a KP player. It's not about rating someone slightly higher now. That's for bottom teams. As a top side now we take the best available to suit our needs and only move from that if there's no-one available to suit the needs at that pick. Clearly there was. Adelaide snapped Talia up next pick. We took a mid with pick 11 (McLean), why pick 12 too. Best available is for bottom teams rebuilding, best available to suit the needs when you're a top team. Hughes must move with the club. We needed the extra tall on top of Henderson, a kid with a handful of games, to replace Fev and we passed it up. I sure we have a gun but the wrong gun. Did love Davies as a pick though.
