Why would the ATO call?

I had a message on the phone today from the ATO telling me to call them within three working days. Why would the ATO want me to call? The only thing I can think of is my tax return but I have always been pretty honest when doing my tax return. Even though I haven't got anything to hide I'm feeling a bit edgy. Any ideas or advice?

Have you been overseas in the past 5 years and forgot to lodge a return?

I wouldnt stress.
If they wanted to audit you you'd receive a letter not a call

Just gave them a call. All it was was that apparently there was some tax bonus cheque for $900 that I didn't receive and they wanted to know what address to send it to. Phew! Woohoo!

I got call from them a few weeks back about lost super, it could be that. Or if you didn't cash the $900 cheque, it may be that. Apparently some of the years overdue data matching started working over summer.
Or you could be in big, big trouble ... but that is less likely.

I know they've been amending a shit load of tax returns lately if you received youth allowance in any of 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. If you were payable in any of those years you received an automatic $550 deduction. Might have something to do with that? I doubt it though cause I just got a letter.

I missed out on that bonus as well. I swear I was eligible for it. Didn't you have to be a low income earner but at least $18,000 in 18 months? Could've really used that when I was at uni.

I had a call from the tax office yesterday saying that they owed me $3000. They gave me another number and pin number to call.

After calling them all i needed to do was pay $165 into a western union account and they would transfere the $3000 immeditatly.

I had a quick look on the net about recent scams and there it was on the ATO website.

They rang back about 3 hours later asking if i had put the money in. Fair to say i gave them a fair spray, but of course they didn't know what i was talking about. After about 5 minutes of some choice words i hung up and called the tax office.

They are looking into it, but have heard of this scam before.
