The 'bastard' case with Hogg is going to be pretty interesting. Anyone have thoughts on whether he'll get banned?

I realise it's a bit of a stunt, but it seems to me that it falls within the letter of the ICC code of conduct, in that the insult disparages on the basis of 'descent'.

Anyone who points out that Harbajan (I assume) isn't a bastard, please also consider that Symonds isn't a monkey either.

Does anyone seriously call someone else a bastard with the intent of labelling them illegitimate children these days? Can't see him going for it.

Until the one day series in India, I didn't realise calling someone a monkey was racist.

Would be a surprise if he went, I admit, and I am playing devil's advocate to some extent. However, whilst I'm sure it wasn't Hogg's intention, in India maybe they do call them a bastard for that reason - cricket is an international sport, we can't just use our standards.

But that's the thing - if it didn't occur in India, then you could possibly understand Harbhajan getting away with it. However, he can't say he wasn't meaning it in a racist context (if he did indeed say it) because its was well-documented in the Indian one-day series.

I can't seriously see Hoggy going for calling someone a bastard - and I am certain the Indians weren't offended by it either.

Yeah, I'm betting the Indians weren't offended. Then again, they might say they were - I'm also betting Hogg will admit (a) that he said it and (b) that he knew what it actually means. There go his two most obvious get-out clauses.

There are very strong racist connation calling someone a monkey, it stems from the belief that Blacks are less evolved and are closer related to monkeys than "real" humans.

So I hear. But I (and I expect many others) had only ever heard it used in a non-racial sense before, suggesting that someone was incompetent. Or possible cute and jumpy. Or just cheeky.

Of course, I agree Harbajan had really lost this excuse ("I didn't know what it meant") after the one day series in India.

I will be there in Perth hanging over the boundary line calling every fielder within range a bastard.

Well, watch how this plays out first. If it blows up any more, you might only get to yell at one fielder before you get kicked out of the ground.

Next time your out go upto someone who is black and call them a monkey.

No offence mate, but when this incident blew up, I had to explain that it was considered racist to about 6 people at work on Monday. I have a friend who called her (Indian, dark-skinned) work colleague a monkey on a regular basis, and was rather shocked to find out this week that it was considered racist. I was hardly the Lone Ranger in not knowing how the word is perceived in some black cultures.

Although, of course, Harbajan can't use the excuse he didn't know, after the series in India.

It comes down to the difference in saying something offensive and saying something knowing that it will be considered offensive. While neither is acceptable the first one is at least understandable.

Apparently the Indians find "b******" offensive. But don't find monkey offensive- but I have no doubt Harby knew that we found it offensive and used it in an offensive manner to Symo (thats if he did say it). I guess one thing why Indian fans are so angry is because in India they have a different culture and they don't really know what the "slang" meaning of monkey is. The monkey over there is a god if I am not mistaken... which is probably why a lot of them are pissed off there. I can see arguements both sides here... The Aussies will be on Symo's side while the Indians will be on Harbhajan's side. It's a very hard issue since the two countries come from different cultures and words mean diffferently. Like some words Indians will find offensive while we think its just normal to use.
