With the retirement of Neitz and Holland, retirement/delisting of White and Yze and delisting of Bode, Weetra and Carroll, Melbourne's tally of departures now stands at 7.
A few questions...
1. Will that be it? Or are there others that will get the chop after trade week?
2. How will / should / can we fill these 7 spots? I can't really see us drafting 7 players so does this mean we may trade a pick for 2 players (Dempster-Schnieder style) or do we rookie list more guys or do we just have a smaller squad than last year?

Cheers.

We have to elevate Wona, that's down to 6 spots. We might elevate Valenti or Spencer that's down to 5, but that's less likely then Wona.

So with 6 spots, we'll definitely use draft picks 1, 17, 19, 35 & i'd say probably 51. There's 5 picks. We also have to consider whether we are going to take anyone in the PSD, that's 6 and a full list.

Before Carroll was a certainty to leave i said that we'd need to get rid of at least one more depending on trade week. If we don't do anything in trade week i think we might still get rid of 1 more.

7 seems pretty good to me, was it 7 last year as well, it's about the right number. I can't really see anyone else who we should delist, every else we have has atleast some trading potential (besides Meesen who I presume has another year on his contract). There is still plenty of room to trade players though either for picks or for fellow players 23 and under. We then use the spots as follows:

Pick 1
Pick 17
Pick 19
Pick 35
Pick 51
PSD pick 1 - (hopefully an uncontracted player slips through - Warnock or Prismall would be great)
Rookie Elevation - Aussie Wonaeamirri

Retain Rookies - Valenti, Spencer, Zomer
Rookie Draft Pick 1

I have a feeling that the Chopper dismissal won't go as we hope, so you can take that back down to 6.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wona and Valenti were left on the rookie list for another year, that way we still have 6 spots to expend in the ND (5) and the PSD (1).

Otherwise, CJ, Jamar, Bartram and Bell could all be put on the chopping block come trade week.

I don't think there is any way Wona won't be upgraded to the senior list. He was our second leading goal kicker (from memory) and what, we'll just leave him on the outer until someone injures himself?

No chance.

Surely he is going, they are just trying to not have to pay him. We will either be allowed to sack him or we will settle with him. If he stays we still have to pay him $250,000, so if we can't sack him settle with him at $190,000 and pay $60,000 for another draft pick. His antics haven't put him in a strong position for settling, if I was him I'd be pretty happy getting anything for next year.

Are you serious? He was awesome last year, had a few 30+ possession games from memory.

I don't necessarily want to see him go, but when you need to get rid of players in a trade week, you can't just say "oh put Carroll's name in the hat" because club's aren't dumb.

They want value. CJ offers that without being indispensable.

Why would Chopper walk now with 190k when he could play an extra year of AFL football and take 250k while he is at it?

Because if the club doesn't want him they will delist him and they will come to a settlement. Contractually he is right to get 250k, but when you've stuffed up as many times as he has you lose your bargaining power, plus if he settles he gets money to move on with his life and does nothing to get it. The 190 is what we can give him and spend 60 on a draft pick and win win! Of course getting him sacked for nothing would be the best result, but I can see the AFLPA going right off. I'm not sure what the going rate for settlements are, I suppose Ken McGregor would be the best person to ask on that one.

We can't delist him because that money would take us over the cap for '08.

Not sure how close we are, but I'd say 190k would still be too much.

Carroll bashed Holland, after Holland was trying to do the right thing - the AFL should take into regard that Holland was acting like a true professional and setting a good example to all AFL players, then Carroll bashes him, so the AFL has to take the treatment of Nick into account aswell..

On top of this, Carroll has already been in previous fights, I really dont think he will get anything.

We couldn't delist him immediately after the incident because that would've still been included in this years cap, but there is a point in time this year (i think after trade week) that we can do it and it counts towards next years cap. ("2008 season" official ends at some point before list submission date of 31st October which will allow us to sack him).

If no one wants Carroll, he'll be delisted regardless of whether or not we pay him out. He will not be at the club next year

I will happily put up the first $1000 to see him go. In fact I will help him pack, book him a flight back to Perth and drive him to the airport.

We could have a debt-demolishon style dinner to send off Carroll. Preferably via rocket to the centre of the sun.

Spot on, Carroll will not be on melbournes list next year, i don;t know the date but your right whenever the first list lodgement goes in thats when we can sack carroll. The shit fight will come over whethe we have to pay him out or not.

In regards to the list 7 spots, they will elevate wona or valenti. We will use picks 1, 17, 19, 35, 51 and (possibly 67). Then use pick one in the PSD. Depending on whether we use pick 67 or not we may need one more spot.

Also with Wona being upgraded frees a spot on the rookie list, they may also delist one of the rookies for another new rookie.

We'll have plenty of spots on our rookie list. I expect us to keep Valenti, Spencer & Zomer on the list and we can add a couple more. To "help" compensate other clubs for the GC17 concessions, the number of rookies a club can have is increasing. Pretty sure that's from this year, but i'm not sure by how many

Yes good point i was reading thath some were the other day, it could even be upto 6 and an addititonal 2 international rookies so 8 in total.

Any danger we could take an international rookie one of these days? I know we've got no money but at least it would make things interesting.

We've already got one. He's from Ireland. Roughly 45 years old. Fairly tall and durable. Goes by the name Jim.

We don't even need money to have international rookies these days. They've dropped the price from $10,000 to $1,000 for international rookies who stay in their country. So basically you can identify them, claim them as your own for $1,000 a year and then watch them develop in their own country before you commit to putting more money into it.

Doggies (also cash strapped) are holding trials in Fiji. Scott Clayton got a massive hard on for Naitanui when he first saw him and asked some questions about some other Fijian athletes. After doing some research, they're holding 2 trials in Fiji this month and are expecting as many as 5,000 to turn up with the plan to sign as many as 4 fijians to international rookie contracts.

Why can't we do that? Lets just steal the dogs idea, its not like they can stop us. They'll get first pick, but that doesn't mean we couldn't nab a few. Or lets hit up Papua New Guinea, they've got 6 times the population of Fiji. Or maybe Soloman islands or Vanuatu. Do something melbourne

I sense frustration!! Surely you haven't forgotten we own the recruiting rites to China?
