For most decades of the 20th century, there is some form of nostalgia. The 1930s perhaps does not attract much nostalgia, given that the first half of that decade saw the Great Depression and the second half the build up to World War 2, but there have been many movies and TV shows set in other past decades for years now.

However, the 1990s do not seem to attract much nostalgia. Perhaps it is too recent - but by the middle of the 1990s there was considerable nostalgia for the 1980s. And while the years of 1990-94 do seem dated now when you look at old photos, the second half of the decade doesn't seem that different from now. The other day I was going through some old video tapes and found a show I had taped in 1998. Despite some things looking out of place (adverts for long departed companies etc), the show itself did not seem that dated. And unless a movie was produced centring around an actual event of the 1990s, it is hard to see a 1990s nostalgia movie been made.

What are your thoughts on this? Will the 1990s ever become "the good old days"?

I'm having 90s nostalgia right now. Perhaps, we go year by year and discuss each 90s year, how we remember it. Let's start with 1990.

1990

Wow, been a while since I've seen any season 1 episode ... I miss them.

Used to own some taped video casettes of that season, but lost them when we moved houses in 1999. :(

Such a good decade.

So many memories.

I agree.

If you look at the clothing and style of the pictures other people have posted, it wouldn't be that out of place now (except maybe fresh prince :D)

Anything that was different about the 90's is usually just the residue of the 80's.

There will be nostalgia to things that were created in the 90's, but not towards the style of the 90's.

That's true. The period of 1990-94 was in many ways an extension of the 1980s (much like the early 1960s, which was more an extension of the 1950s, rather than the "true" 1960s), so this time period can be considered retro. But 1995 onwards is not that different from today; you could hypothetically go back in time and blend right in.

I agree with this post with one change: the 90's will become popular after 2010.

My reasoning as thus: when I grew up in the 70's the 50's were popular. I remember Happy Days, That'll Be The Day (movie), Marilyn Monroe and James Dean (I suppose ever popular though), lots of rockabilly shows, Ol' 55 etc...

Then during the 80's the 60's were all go: Beatles became every popular again, The Beach Boys, Paisly ties, Mods clothing, covers of 60's hits by bands such as The Bangles and it was feel-good 60's lovin' all over the shop including lava lamps.

By the time I had turned adult in the 90's it was that horrific 70's all over again late in the decade with disco, more movies about the 70's - Studio 54, Boogie Nights etc...

Now we're going through the 80's retro-lerv and I guess I don't have to go into all the stuff but as you can see it's a 20 year trend to get retro. My take is that when you're at school you're influenced by the trends and by the time you're 30 something you must be controlling the trends and we are all nostalgic so we're influencing what comes back to an extent.

I agree tim. For a while there I thought the 80's was a nothing era and then suddenly 20 years later it was all the rage. I love my 80's nostalgia now. I miss those days.

I remember even thinking back then how the 60's and 70's had such iconic fashion and thinking that the 80's didn't have a particular style. I guess it seemed so normal back then that I didn't think tucking my pants into my socks was anything but normal. I guess I thought I'd be doing it forever.
