I think if you view the footage, the simulated spears were not thrown in to the crowd. They were directed towards the small bunch of Carlton supporters gathered in the forward pocket section of the outer.

If you watch the Geelong incident from last year, Willie clearly said something to Brad Close which gets Jeremy Cameron angrier than I've ever seen him on a footy field. Georgiades is trying to physically remove Willie from the situation and in the push and shove that follows, no Port player appears to be defending Willie. It's blatantly clear that those who heard the comment/s - from both teams - found it unacceptable.
