I have it and have had a few issues.

I got it with the new laptop I got last year (Dell Inspiron 1501) and it really struggled to handle Vista. I ended up getting extra memory to cope with it.

Vista is OK. I reckon is geared towards people that want to organise their music and photos, which is not really my bag personally.

Gamer, yes choose XP. Although with the patches and SP1, Vista only drops a few FPS now on my mates computer.

Any video editor should use a mac.

Vista is hardly too slow now, especially if you buy a new computer.

Vista may only drop a few FPS. but older games don't work all the time...

I personally have a good computer. i have a computer that if you bought from acer/dell it would cost you $2,000 right now and when running Vista. i had problems.

I had numerous BSOD's(error screen which means you need to restart the computer).

I hadn't had a BSOD in 10 months of having this computer with XP.. i had 10 BSOD's in half a month with Vista

The computer crashed multiple times.

Any program i installed had been installed by myself on XP or are the Vista version of a program i had installed on XP.

And even if i did video edit. i wouldn't use a mac. you can get just as good software on windows.

Looks like you need to learn to use the computer properly, I had one BSOD in all my months of using Vista.

And please, nothing on Windows comes close to Final Cut Pro and Avid.

I might be getting a laptop on sunday, Vista comes with it, should I requesy if they could install XP or stick with Vista?

Depends where you buy it from. If you buy it from, as an example, harvey norman, your chances are slim to none of getting XP installed on instead. Those computers come pre-loaded with Vista and Harvey Norman do nothing.

If you get the laptop built from scratch, to your specifications, then I can't see that being a problem

I had my computer built for me by a mate of mine, and I'm rapt with it. Vista works fine for me. Money well worth spent. :thumbsu:

Yeh, getting it from HN. It has 2GB RAM so i don't think there'll won't be much of a problem with Vista.

I guess that also depends on other specs of the laptop, but yes, you're probably right. It shouldn't be a problem.

Just be careful with the laptop you buy. Might steer clear of Acer if I were you, getting dodgier every year

not the easiest thing to find, just buy a decent laptop and youll have no issues with vista. spending 1500-2000 is plenty.

dual core 2 processor,
2 gig of ram if possible
hd is not an issue
128 dedicated graphics at least,
have a good look around as the stores are selling for back to school, good deals are to be found.

last of all dont compromise on price as too many people buy crap computers and expect miracles.

as for video editing on pcs ive never had trouble so macs are meaningless unless your into status symbols.

I've been using computers all my life. and i know how to use a computer enough to make quite a bit of money with little effort.

It's a Toshiba. And has the following:

dual core 2 processor
2 gig ram
128MB Graphics card
150GB HDD

Thoughts?

More info please. What kind of dual core processor, what kind of ram, what kind of graphics card?

If you're intending to use this for games, 128MB on that card is not enough.

Vista is a waste of money assuming you already have XP.

Agreed. At the moment. But in about 6 months and onwards you really wouldn't want to be buying a new computer thats out of date and has XP. If i was buying a new computer now i'd make sure it has Vista.

asus = number one

i got laughed at for buying a hp

acer are fine. i sell the things and it all comes down to what you can get for the money.

and i dont think my $1100 was money badly spent on a 1.7 dual core 2
120gb hd
1 gig ram
and 128 video card.
and vista working fine on it.

Installed it today and having a bit of a play. I don`t really see what all the Hoohah is about. It works fine.

Has some excellent productivity type tools.

When it's all said and done Windows Longhorn, er Vista, is still only Windows NT 6.0.
Microsoft call Windows 2000 NT 5.0 and XP 5.2. I particularly like the story about the Asian guy who had the winning door ticket at the Harvey Norman (Sydney) release of Vista. What did he win? He won the right to buy the first copy of Vista Ultimate sold in Australia (but it was signed by Bill Gates). What tight-arses.

Vista is great if you have some decent hardware. People said the same crap about XP when it was released, it's just how things go.

Intel 2 Quad Core 2.5ghz
3GB DDR2 RAM
NX8600GTS. 256mb

Vista works good for me. Don't believe everything you hear from folks who have never actually used it before.

PS, I do prefer Linux overall though but I'm a bit of a nerd lol
